My name is Officer Lisa Rakes and I am part of the Lexington Mounted Police Unit and with me today is Officer David Johnson. He is also with the Mounted Police Unit. We are located at the Mounted Police Stables which is located in downtown Lexington. Now David, can you tell me just a little bit about this Mounted Police Colloquium that we host every year? Yes, we host a training, seminar and competition. What we do is we invite officers from all over the United States, even Canada, to come down and train with us for a couple of days. We bring in instructors, some of the best instructors we can find in the mounted world of policing, and just try to have training that incorporates things you can take back with you, use in your unit and apply to the streets. Now these instructors, where would these instructors come from? We look all over. Past instructors, we've actually brought people from London, England, Toronto, Canada, we've had instructors from Detroit, New Orleans, the U.S. Parks Police have sent instructors for us before. Wherever we can find people who are doing cutting edge training with police mounts, we try to get them in here. And this training, from what I understand, consists of equitation, crowd control, obstacle type training, is that correct? We try to run the whole gamut. A good police horse has to have that equitation background. No matter what happens, we have to have a rider that can sit in the saddle when the horse is maybe not being as cooperative as it needs to be. By that same token, we put the horse through obstacle training and training with crowds and noises to help the horse kind of learn that he can get through this with the help of the rider and become a team and actually function in that kind of environment. And some of our participants, where do they come from? Again, it's open to any recognized agency, whether it be law enforcement, search and rescue, we actually do have it open to volunteers.
