There's a fundraiser. There's Art in Bloom coming up. There's the Heart Ball. And we keep track of where dresses are going in terms of we don't want you to show up with the same dress on. I'm Nikki Heckelbeck. I'm the director of media services for the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau. I'm going to go to the next episode. Visit Lex has a couple different purposes. All of them are to bring people into town, into Lexington, whether it's a convention or a meeting or maybe a family reunion, military reunions. We have a whole staff of salespeople that are out there looking for meetings and conventions to bring into Lexington. And then we have the visitor side where we're looking to bring leisure tourists into town. So the overall goal is always put people in those hotel rooms overnight and drive tourism in Lexington. We were down at the corner of Rose and Vine for about 17 years, and that was a great location for us. But we have a new president now, Mr. Jim Browder, and he wanted us to be closer to kind of the hub of downtown where the hotels are, the convention center, that sort of thing. We thought we'd see more foot traffic right here in Victorian Square, and so far that has proved to be true. We worked with Solid Light, who's over in Louisville, to help design this space. They've done some other very prominent locations around the state, some of the bourbon distilleries, Heaven Hill and Maker's Mark they were also involved with. So we had a great team of designers over there that helped us put together a center that really showcases the horses, the history, the bourbon, and a new section that we have called Explore My Lex, which is everything from restaurants to festivals and events, different things that happen throughout the year that are of interest to both locals and people who are visiting us. Well, certainly we always welcome people here at the Visitor Center, so just come on down and see us. We're open Monday through Friday from 8.30 to 5 and also on Saturday from 10 to 5, and then during the summer months also on Sundays. You can also go online 24 hours a day. We have a very robust website at www.visitlex.com. We've got a lot of great interactive displays here at the Visitor Center. Center. Several touch screens that showcase different areas of interest. This one obviously is for bourbon. You can learn all sorts of things about bourbon, see some videos of the local distilleries, that sort of thing. You can even come over here and if you'd like to smell what one of the bourbons smells like, that's a really fun thing for folks to do and a great interactive tool for us. Behind you here we have a replica of a working still, which I think is a lot of fun. Bourbon, of course, is a big driver for tourism here in the central part of Kentucky, so we definitely wanted to get that information out there for people. This screen over here is all about the history in central Kentucky, so when you click on that, it will take you to, again, a library of films that we've put together on different areas around town. We have all sorts of information for folks to pick up and take with them. them any kind of attraction that they'd like to go to we can help them with that. We also are selling some merchandise here now in our new location. We're very proud to have a Lexington KYT shirt now. We also have blue ones for the kids and those I think have been quite popular. Now something that everybody wants to do when they're visiting a new destination I think is eat food that's local to the area. So, you know, not everybody wants to eat at a chain restaurant when they're on the road. So what we have over here is Beyond Grits. This is one of our very new guides that we have. It's a nice little booklet that gives profiles of some of our chefs here in Lexington and the central Kentucky area, and then all sorts of information on winery tours and that sort of thing, along with the brand-new Brewgrass Trail, which is a collection of local brewers that are setting up shop here in Lexington and the surrounding areas. We'll tell you why. This is more up next on this week's edition of Lexington Now. I'm Sherelle Roberts and welcome to another edition of Lexington Now where we take a look at the news that shapes your urban county government. The decision to place a loved one into nursing home care can be a traumatic experience for the whole family, but there are ways to help make it less so. Robert McClellan shares his memories of his grandmother and the importance of being actively involved in nursing home care. I know how to live independently today and tomorrow, how to plan for future physical, emotional, and financial well-being, how to choose the best option for housing, how to stay mobile, sharp, and engaged, how to take care of myself as a caregiver. My personal experience started when I was in high school, and my grandmother, who was in her 80s, had to come live with us because she had dementia. And it wasn't an Alzheimer's-type dementia, but her memory had begun to fail. So my mom, rather than leave her at home, took her into our home. It was really a blessing. We got to share that life, which I never would have. She lived here in Lexington, we were in West Virginia. So I got to experience a time with my grandmother that was a full-time, 365-day-a-year experience. She was special. Unfortunately she decompensated to the point, and this often happens, to where she could no longer stay with us in the house. My mom couldn't stay up 24-7. I'm often telling my clients that you really at some point will not be qualified as a caregiver because the level of care that's going to be necessary is going to be 365, 24-7, and you've got to pick the person up or help them in their life necessities, and individuals maybe can't do that. We took care of my grandmother for about a year and a half, and then she required skilled nursing care, and she went to nursing care. No one wants to go to the nursing home, and I always get the question, well, which is the best nursing home? Well, none of them are the best nursing homes because a nursing home is only as good as what you watch. And there are so many people, I would estimate probably 80 to 90 percent of the people in nursing homes never get visitors. And there is a role for general public just to go visit and wander the hall there and just speak to the people because it's just a reach out and touch that people don't get. My grandmother got care 24-7, and my mother went to see her every day, and if not every day, she was calling the nursing home, so she got good care. Eventually, she passed in the nursing home and was taken for burial. That's an experience, though, that when we look at end-of-life experiences, it's kind of a double-edged sword. You almost feel like, gosh, I hate to see them deteriorating like this. And it's a painful dilemma that we get into when we really care for somebody who has long-age dementia, where we're going to face years of problems. So it takes a special person to provide care and a special person to be an employee in a nursing home. Put on your green. Lexington's annual St. Patrick's Day celebration is just around the corner, and it's going to be bigger and better than ever this year. There are all kinds of activities planned for people of all ages. Bill Enright gives us the details. It's that time of the year again. We're approaching St. Patrick's Day and the 34th annual Lexington All-Tec St. Patrick's Parade and Irish Festival. We're going to have it this year on Saturday, March 16th. in Centerpoint again, thanks to the web companies, and they're graciously allowing us to use it again. The parade is going to be at 1 o'clock. However, there's going to be a lot of other activities. The festival starts at 11 with the traditional blessing of the keg, which is great fun. We bring the keg of Kentucky bourbon barrel ale in with the piper. Have it blessed by a priest, tap it, of course, and then pass out samples to the folks there and maybe have an Irish toast or two along the way. It's great fun. And then the entertainment starts at that point. And we have continuous entertainment from 11 in the morning until 7 at night with a break at 1 o'clock for the parade on Main Street. And this year we've got a lot of exciting things going on in the festival as well as at the parade. For example, in the parade we're thrilled to have Chris McCarran, and Hall of Fame jockey, originator of the North American Racing Academy, and so on as our Grand Marshal. We've been at this parade now since 1980, and Chris is one of a long line of terrific Grand Marshals. He typifies everything that's right about this place. He typifies everything that we feel proud to be Irish about. In addition to being a world-class athlete, I would typify Chris as being just a world-class person. He typifies everything that's good about Irish culture. For example, among his many achievements is the Mike Venezia Memorial Award for Extraordinary Sportsmanship and Citizenship. That tells you a lot about Chris right there. Of course, he's a world-class jockey, won the Kentucky Derby on Alice Sheba and the Prickness as well. In addition to those races, he's won nine Breeders' Cups, four other Triple Crowns, and when he retired after 28 years of racing, he was the leader in purse earnings and earned more than $264 million in winnings. And he didn't stop there, his contributions to the thoroughbred industry. He decided it would be appropriate in Lexington to have this writing academy, and he helped initiate that. Just a wonderful, wonderful guy. and we're very, very pleased and honored to have him as the Grand Marshal for the parade. Other activities that are going to be fun at the parade this year, we have an honor band joining us. They are the Wolf County High School Marching Band. That's an interesting tale. They've been in the parade a few times, and it's quite an experience for the kids to come from Wolf County all the way to Lexington to be in the big parade, and they get a big kick out of it, we do as well, and the crowd loves them. A couple of years ago, I got a call saying, we're sorry we already sent our application to be in the parade, but we're going to have to back out because a tornado hit us. And it tore the school up, tore the music room up, and it just devastated the place. But being the kind of folks the Wolf County people are, they built it back together, They put the school back together. They put the music room back together. And the kids got back out there marching. So I invited them again and said, I'd really love to have them in here. And we're going to call them the honor band of the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Then I got another call saying, budgets are so tight that we can't afford the bus, we can't afford the overtime, the gas, and so on. So we went hunting, and we found a couple of sponsors anonymously are going to subsidize their trip into town. so we are thrilled to have the Wolf County High School band. And of course we're going to have other bands as well. We'll have our two bagpipe bands that join us every year and other exciting things. A real crowd favorite that will be back again this year, the kids love it, the adults love it, everybody loves them, is the Border Collies that herd a sheep down Main Street under complete control of the dogs, and it is a hoot to watch those dogs work. After the parade, they go into Center Point where they're available, and the kids can go and meet the sheep and pet them and all that kind of stuff. So it's great fun. And all the other kinds of things that we love about the parade. We've got beauty queens, and we're going to have the winners of the Rose of Tralee Rose Contest in the parade and so on. So we're looking for a big time. Again, doing it since 1980, and we're going to keep at it until we get it right. Advances in forecasting allow the NOAA National Weather Service to predict severe weather before there's even a cloud in the sky. Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches give you advance notice that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When your area is in a watch, be sure to stay alert for changing weather. Remember, a watch is not a warning. A warning is only issued when severe weather is about to strike. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, monitors weather conditions across the United States. They issue daily forecasts showing areas of the country that are likely to experience severe weather. In the hours before storms form, the Storm Prediction Center discusses the weather with National Weather Service Forecast Offices within the areas at risk. The Storm Prediction Center then issues a watch to notify people in those areas to stay alert for severe weather. A watch also includes information about what type of weather you might see and the chances of it actually occurring. The risk level can range from a few storms with hail and high winds to a particularly dangerous situation when deadly tornadoes could occur. The most important thing you can do when a watch is issued is to stay alert for developing storms and understand your risk. Be sure to tune in to your local news for updated weather information. You can also get instant weather alerts from NOAA Weather Radio. Watches also provide an opportunity to review your family emergency plan as well as check your disaster supplies kit. When the risk increases and severe weather moves in, you'll be ready if a warning is issued. As warmer weather arrives, so does an increase in car break-ins or LFAs, larceny for mottos, as the police call them. Here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim. It doesn't matter if your car is a classic, a Cadillac or a clunker, it could easily be a target for criminals. That's if you're not taking the proper steps to protect it. Some people, that's how they make their living. They'll break into a car because it's easy for them. They can just walk by, look around. It's almost like window shopping to somebody. Officer Steven Gahn says the simplest things can lure crooks to your car. Purse is nice sunglasses loose change in the cup holder on the floorboard if they see something they like Then they can break in and get it and that's easy money for them Easy money is something many are looking to come by in these tough economic times In fact last month more than 300 cars were broken into in Lexington Many times those items are pawned there are other times when someone has actually asked them do you know somebody that might be selling this? And they'll specifically look at cars for that particular item so they can sell it on a one-on-one basis. The truth about LFAs or larceny from autos can be frightening, but you can do things to protect yourself. Locking the doors is the number one way to stop most LFAs. It may sound simple, but locking your doors is the key to prevention, says Gauntz. If they walk by and they check the door handle and the door opens on them, then they can root through the car and look for anything they want. But if it is locked, most criminals would see it as too much work to steal from. Some people wouldn't take the extra step to break the glass out or try to jimmy the door open. But don't underestimate the bad guys, says Gauntz. They have sort of a sixth sense for detecting a crime opportunity, especially when it comes to electronics like GPSs. Even though the GPS may be taken down and the mount is removed from the vehicle, a lot of times thieves still know that you've had a GPS or some type of mount in the car because on the windshield it will actually leave a ring on the windshield. Officer Gaunt says remove all trace of dust rings and suction cup rings and then remove any other items from your car. Hide valuables. Don't leave valuables sitting in a car seat, on your dash. even though you think it's not very valuable like the loose change on the floorboard, that is still one reason that someone will try to break into the car. And one last tip to remember as you're getting out of your car, be sure to take one last look. Make sure you didn't leave anything on the seats so that way you won't be an easy target. From protecting your car to fixing up your house, with spring just a few short weeks away, you may be thinking about outdoor construction projects around your home or business. But did you know it's against the law to dig without first calling Kentucky 811? Here's what you should know before you dig. Kentucky has a law that's on the books that was established in 1994. It's KRS 367-4901 through 4917. And it requires that anyone who's digging and doing any type of excavating activity anywhere on any property, except on your private property using hand tools, then you must call 811 two days before you dig to have things located. There's eight exemptions in that law. One of them is working on private property using non-mechanized equipment. There's other things in there such as landfills and cemeteries, things like that, which are pretty standard licensed things, coal mining operations, things like that. But any other type of excavating activity, you must call two business days prior to performing that excavation to be in compliance with that law. There's gas lines, there's water lines, electric lines, Anything that is a utility service that provides service to communities and neighborhoods, subdivisions, whatever, can be interrupted by digging into those facilities. The pipelines, wires, cables, sewer lines, some things carry hazardous materials that could actually cause a lot of problems when they're damaged or interrupted. In Kentucky, we have a damage about every 40 minutes on average. somewhere within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, which is entirely too many damages. And 50% of those damages are caused by people who just fail to call and have things located prior to doing their digging activities. The law states that the person or the entity who is doing the excavating activity must be the one that calls. So if you contract someone to come onto your property and, let's say, replace a water service, and it's the excavator, the person doing the work's responsibility, to call two days in advance to have that located, not the homeowner. Now, it's the homeowner's responsibility if they're the one doing the work. It's the person or entity, individual or entity doing the work, their responsibility to comply with this law. Here's how the process works. You call 811, two business days in advance. We'll collect some information from you. Gather some proximity locations, cross streets, where you're digging at, front, rear, side of your property, what type of work you're doing, how deep you plan on digging, and then we'll notify the utility operators that operate in that area of proximity to where you're digging at, and they will dispatch people who will come out and put paint flags, stakes, whatever type of message they need to also give you in addition to locating those facilities. They'll put that stuff on the ground. We will also issue you a number. It's a unique number just to your job that you need to have on the job site because you could be audited by the police department or by any law enforcement agency to make sure that you have complied with that law. But that number is unique to that particular job, to that excavator doing that work, and it's tracked back through our records, and those are maintained for five years. The most prominent way of locating is with paint. Sometimes when it's wet conditions, they'll use wooden stakes that are dipped on the tips with the color-coding system, or they'll use metal flags that have the plastic color code flag on the top of them. Each color has its own particular meaning. For instance, yellow indicates that there is a buried natural gas or petroleum or steam line. Red stands for electric. Orange could be either cable or telecommunications in some form, telephone or cable. Blue is water. You can get more information by visiting our website, which is www.kentucky811.org. And on there, under a tab at the top called Homeowner Information, that whole color coding scale will drop down and you can see what each color means. 811 is an operator-based telephone receiving system and education system. And we have a notification network to all the utilities within the state of Kentucky. And we notify them when somebody's digging, where they're planning on digging, the date that they're planning on doing that digging. We give them all that information, and they dispatch their personnel to come out and locate those facilities. The law is specific on the timing of this. You must call two business days in advance to have things located. You must start your work within 10 days. and then after 21 days you must have those locate marks renewed if you're still performing excavating activity. So you can't use a locate from 2009 for work that you're going to do in 2010. It has to be within a 10-day period for those locates to be valid because things can change over a period of time. So it's two days in advance, must start your work within 10 days, and after 21 days you have to call it back in again and have those refreshed. The law gives all law enforcement agencies, all sworn peace officers, anywhere within the Commonwealth of Kentucky the ability to write citations for noncompliance with this law. The first offense penalty is $250. The second offense is $1,000. And the third offense and any subsequent offenses is $3,000. And that is a citation just like a traffic citation that a police officer can issue on a dig site. Safe digging is no accident. It takes compliance by the utility company, by the excavator, by the one-call center, which is Kentucky 811, all working in synchronization to make this happen. And it's not just a safety issue. It's not just a compliance with the law, but it could save you money. It could save your life. It could prevent injuries. So it's the right thing to do. And not only that, it's required by Kentucky state law that you do that. The service that's provided by Kentucky 811 and the locating of the facilities that's performed by the utility companies is absolutely free. There is not a charge for that any time, under any circumstances. It is free. But, however, you must wait two days to have that done. It gives them time to refer to their maps and get all their system information together so that when they dispatch the people out to locate it, they can be as accurate as possible. And they will give you not only a location on the ground, but they'll provide you an 18-inch buffer zone on each side of that locate marking, which is a hand-dig zone. If you're crossing a utility with your facility, you must comply with that 18-inch hand-dig zone on each side of that marked facility. I'm Sherelle Roberts and welcome to another edition of Lexington Now, where we take a look at the news that shapes your urban county government. The decision to place a loved one into nursing home care can be a traumatic experience for the whole family, but there are ways to help make it less so. Robert McClellan shares his memories of his grandmother and the importance of being actively involved in nursing home care. I know how to live independently today and tomorrow, how to plan for future physical, emotional, and financial well-being, how to choose the best option for housing how to stay mobile sharp and engaged how to take care of myself as a caregiver not personal experience started when I was in high school and and my grandmother who was in her 80s had to come live with us because she had she had dementia and it wasn't an Alzheimer's type dementia but her memory had begun to fail and so my mom rather than rather than leave her at home took her into our home and it was really a blessing we got to share that life which I never would have she lived here in Lexington we were in West Virginia and and so I got to experience a time with my grandmother that was a full-time 365 day a year experience well she was special. And unfortunately, she decompensated to the point, and this often happens, to where she could no longer stay with us in the house. My mom couldn't stay up 24-7. I'm often telling my clients that, you know, you really at some point will not be qualified as a caregiver because the level of care that's going to be necessary is going to be 365, 24-7, and You've got to pick the person up or help them in their life necessities, and individuals maybe can't do that. We took care of my grandmother for about a year and a half, and then she required skilled nursing care, and she went to nursing care. No one wants to go to the nursing home, and I always get the question, well, which is the best nursing home? Well, none of them are the best nursing homes. because a nursing home is only as good as what you watch. And there are so many people, I would estimate probably 80 to 90 percent of the people in nursing homes never get visitors. And there is a role for general public just to go visit and wander the hall there and just speak to the people because it's just a reach out and touch that people don't get. My grandmother got care 24-7, and my mother went to see her every day, and if not every day, she was calling the nursing home, so she got good care. Eventually, she passed in the nursing home and was taken for burial. That's an experience, though, that when we look at end-of-life experiences, it's kind of a double-edged sword. You almost feel like, gosh, I hate to see them deteriorating like this. And it's a painful dilemma that we get into when we really care for somebody who has long-age dementia, where we're going to face years of problems. So it takes a special person to provide care and a special person to be an employee in a nursing home. Put on your green. Lexington's annual St. Patrick's Day celebration is just around the corner, and it's going to be bigger and better than ever this year. There are all kinds of activities planned for people of all ages. Bill Enright gives us the details. It's that time of the year again. We're approaching St. Patrick's Day and the 34th annual Lexington All-Tec St. Patrick's Parade and Irish Festival. We're going to have it this year on Saturday, March 16th. in Centerpoint again, thanks to the web companies, and they're graciously allowing us to use it again. The parade is going to be at 1 o'clock. However, there's going to be a lot of other activities. The festival starts at 11 with the traditional blessing of the keg, which is great fun. We bring the keg of Kentucky bourbon barrel ale in with the piper. Have it blessed by a priest, tap it, of course, and then pass out samples to the folks there and maybe have an Irish toast or two along the way. It's great fun. And then the entertainment starts at that point. And we have continuous entertainment from 11 in the morning until 7 at night with a break at 1 o'clock for the parade on Main Street. And this year we've got a lot of exciting things going on in the festival as well as at the parade. For example, in the parade we're thrilled to have Chris McCarron, Hall of Fame jockey, originator of the North American Racing Academy, and so on, as our Grand Marshal. We've been at this parade now since 1980, and Chris is one of a long line of terrific Grand Marshals. He typifies everything that's right about this place. He typifies everything that we feel proud to be Irish about. Cut. In addition to being a world-class athlete, I would typify Chris as being just a world-class person. He typifies everything that's good about Irish culture. For example, among his many achievements is the Mike Venezia Memorial Award for Extraordinary Sportsmanship and Citizenship. That tells you a lot about Chris right there. Of course, he's a world-class jockey, won the Kentucky Derby on Alice Sheba and the Pricknicks. as well. In addition to those races, he's won nine Breeders' Cups, four other Triple Crowns, and when he retired after 28 years of racing, he was the leader in purse earnings and earned more than $264 million in winnings. And he didn't stop there his contributions to the thoroughbred industry. He decided it would be appropriate in Lexington to have this riding academy, and he helped initiate that. Just a wonderful guy and we're very, very pleased and honored to have him as the Grand Marshal for the parade. Other activities that are going to be fun at the parade this year we have an honor band joining us. They are the Wolf County High School Marching Band. That's an interesting tale. They've been in the parade a few times and it's quite a experience for the kids to come from Wolf County all the way to Lexington to be in the big parade, and they get a big kick out of it, and we do as well, and the crowd loves them. A couple of years ago, I got a call saying, we're sorry we already sent our application to be in the parade, but we're going to have to back out because a tornado hit us, and it tore the school up, tore the music room up, and it just devastated the place. But being the kind of folks that Wolf County people are, they built it back together, They put the school back together. They put the music room back together. And the kids got back out there marching. So I invited them again and said, I'd really love to have them in here. And we're going to call them the honor band of the St. Patrick's Save Parade. Then I got another call saying, budgets are so tight that we can't afford the bus, we can't afford the overtime, the gas, and so on. So we went hunting, and we found a couple of sponsors anonymously are going to subsidize their trip into town. So we are thrilled to have the Wolf County High School Band. And, of course, we're going to have other bands as well. We'll have our two bagpipe bands that join us every year and other exciting things. A real crowd favorite that will be back again this year, the kids love it, the adults love it, everybody loves them, is the Border Collies that herd a sheep down Main Street under complete control of the dogs, and it is a hoot to watch those dogs work. After the parade, they go into Center Point where they're available, and the kids can go and meet the sheep and pet them and all that kind of stuff. So it's great fun. And all the other kinds of things that we love about the parade. We've got beauty queens, and we're going to have the winners of the Rose of Tralee Rose Contest in the parade and so on. So we're looking for a big time, again, doing it since 1980, and we're going to keep at it until we get it right. Advances in forecasting allow the NOAA National Weather Service to predict severe weather before there's even a cloud in the sky. Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches give you advance notice that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When your area is in a watch, be sure to stay alert for changing weather. Remember, a watch is not a warning. A warning is only issued when severe weather is about to strike. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, monitors weather conditions across the United States. They issue daily forecasts showing areas of the country that are likely to experience severe weather. In the hours before storms form, the Storm Prediction Center discusses the weather with National Weather Service forecast offices within the areas at risk. The Storm Prediction Center then issues a watch to notify people in those areas to stay alert for severe weather. A watch also includes information about what type of weather you might see and the chances of it actually occurring. The risk level can range from a few storms with hail and high winds to a particularly dangerous situation when deadly tornadoes could occur. The most important thing you can do when a watch is issued is to stay alert for developing storms and understand your risk. Be sure to tune in to your local news for updated weather information. You can also get instant weather alerts from NOAA Weather Radio. Watches also provide an opportunity to review your family emergency plan as well as check your disaster supplies kit. When the risk increases and severe weather moves in, you'll be ready if a warning is issued. For more information, contact the Division of Central Purchasing at 859-258-3320. road welcome back to the show as warmer weather arrives so does an increase in car break-ins or lfas larceny for mottos as the police call them here are some tips to help you avoid becoming a victim it doesn't matter if your car is a classic a cadillac or a clunker easily be a target for criminals that's if you're not taking the proper steps to protect it some people that's how they make their living They'll break into a car because it's easy for them. They can just walk by, look around. It's almost like window shopping to somebody. Officer Stephen Gond says the simplest things can lure crooks to your car. Purses, nice sunglasses, loose change in the cup holder or on the floorboard. If they see something they like, then they can break in and get it, and that's easy money for them. Easy money is something many are looking to come by in these tough economic times. In fact, last month, more than 300 cars were broken into in Lexington. Many times, those items are pawned. There are other times when someone has actually asked them, do you know somebody that might be selling this? And they'll specifically look at cars for that particular item so they can sell it on a one-on-one basis. The truth about LFAs or larceny from autos can be frightening, but you can do things to protect yourself. Locking the doors is the number one way to stop most LFAs. It may sound simple, but locking your doors is the key to prevention, says Gauntz. If they walk by and they check the door handle and the door opens on them, then they can route through the car and look for anything they want. But if it is locked, most criminals would see it as too much work to steal from. Some people wouldn't take the extra step to break the glass out or try to jimmy the door open. But don't underestimate the bad guys, says Gontz. They have sort of a sixth sense for detecting a crime opportunity, especially when it comes to electronics like GPSs. Even though the GPS may be taken down and the mount is removed from the vehicle, a lot of times thieves still know that you've had a GPS or some type of mount in the car because on the windshield it will actually leave a ring on the windshield. Officer Gantt says remove all trace of dust rings and suction cup rings and then remove any other items from your car. Hide valuables. Don't leave valuables sitting in a car seat on your dash. Even though you think it's not very valuable, like the loose change on the floorboard, that is still one reason that someone will try to break into the car. And one last tip to remember as you're getting out of your car, be sure to take one last look. Make sure you didn't leave anything on the seats, so that way you won't be an easy target. From protecting your car to fixing up your house, with spring just a few short weeks away, you may be thinking about outdoor construction projects around your home or business. But did you know it's against the law to dig without first calling Kentucky 811? Here's what you should know before you dig. Kentucky has a law that's on the books that was established in 1994. It's KRS 367-4901-4917. and it requires that anyone who's digging and doing any type of excavating activity anywhere on any property except on your private property using hand tools, then you must call 811 two days before you dig to have things located. There's eight exemptions in that law. One of them is working on private property using non-mechanized equipment. There's other things in there such as landfills and cemeteries, things like that, which are pretty standard licensed things, coal mining operations, things like that. But any other type of excavating activity, you must call two business days prior to performing that excavation to be in compliance with that law. The gas lines, there's water lines, electric lines, anything that is a utility service that provides service to communities and neighborhoods, subdivisions, whatever, can be interrupted by digging into those facilities. The pipelines, wires, cables, sewer lines, some things carry hazardous materials that could actually cause a lot of problems when they're interrupted, when their damages are interrupted. In Kentucky, we have a damage about every 40 minutes on average, somewhere within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, which is entirely too many damages. And 50% of those damages are caused by people who just fail to call and have things located prior to doing their digging activities. The law states that the person or the entity who is doing the excavating activity must be the one that calls. So if you contract someone to come onto your property and, let's say, replace a water service, it is the excavator, the person doing the work's responsibility to call two days in advance to have that located, not the homeowner. Now, it's the homeowner's responsibility if they're the one doing the work. It's the person or entity, individual or entity, doing the work, their responsibility to comply with this law. Here's how the process works. You call 811, two business days in advance. We'll collect some information from you. Gather some proximity locations, cross streets, where you're digging at, front, rear, side of your property, what type of work you're doing, how deep you plan on digging, and then we'll notify the utility operators that operate in that area of proximity to where you're digging at, and they will dispatch people who will come out and put paint flags, stakes, whatever type of message they need to also give you in addition to locating those facilities. They'll put that stuff on the ground. We will also issue you a number. It's a unique number just to your job that you need to have on the job site because you can be audited by the police department or by any law enforcement agency to make sure that you have complied with that law. But that number is unique to that particular job, to that excavator doing that work, and it's tracked back through our records, and those are maintained for five years. The most prominent way of locating is with paint. Sometimes when it's wet conditions, they'll use wooden stakes that are dipped on the tips with the color coding system, or they'll use metal flags that have the plastic color code flag on the top of them. Each color has its own particular meaning. For instance, yellow indicates that there is a buried natural gas or petroleum or steam line. Red stands for electric. Orange could be either cable or telecommunications in some form, telephone or cable. Blue is water. You can get more information by visiting our website, which is www.kentucky811.org. And on there, under a tab at the top called homeowner information, that whole color coding scale will drop down and you can see what each color means. 811 is an operator-based telephone receiving system and education system. And we have a notification network to all the utilities within the state of Kentucky. And we notify them when somebody's digging, where they're planning on digging, the date that they're planning on doing that digging. We give them all that information and they dispatch their personnel to come out and locate those facilities. The law is specific on the timing of this. of this. You must call two business days in advance to have things located. You must start your work within 10 days. And then after 21 days, you must have those locate marks renewed if you're still performing excavating activity. So you can't use a locate from 2009 for work that you're going to do in 2010. It has to be within a 10-day period for those locates to be valid because things can change over a period of time. So it's two days in advance, must start to work within 10 days, and after 21 days you have to call it back in again and have those refreshed. The law gives all law enforcement agencies, all sworn peace officers anywhere within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the ability to write citations for noncompliance with this law. The first offense penalty is $250. The second offense is $1,000, and the third offense in any subsequent offenses is $3,000. And that is a citation just like a traffic citation that a police officer can issue on a dig site. Safe digging is no accident. It takes compliance by the utility company, by the excavator, by the one-call center, which is Kentucky 811, all working in synchronization to make this happen. And it's not just a safety issue. It's not just a compliance with the law, but it could save you money. It could save your life. if it could prevent injuries. So it's the right thing to do. And not only that, it's required by Kentucky state law that you do that. The service that's provided by Kentucky 811 and the locating of the facilities that's performed by the utility companies is absolutely free. There is not a charge for that any time, under any circumstances. It is free. But, however, you must wait two days to have that done. It gives them time to refer to their maps and get all their system information together so that when they dispatch the people out to locate it, they can be as accurate as possible. And they will give you not only a location on the ground, but they'll provide you an 18-inch buffer zone on each side of that locate marking, which is a hand-dig zone. If you're crossing a utility with your facility, you must comply with that 18-inch hand-dig zone on each side of that marked facility. To me, this is one of the best public-private partnerships that we have had. Parks provided the land. We have about 36 acres of dog parks. They are all fenced, off-leash areas. The first three months we were able to keep about 50% of the garage open, but we've had to close it now and the last five months it will be closed completely to assist the contractors in being able to get all of the renovation work done in a safe manner where we don't have other vehicles in the area where they're jackhammering and creating dust or debris. Again this project is about a 3.1 million dollar project and most of the work is replacement of bad concrete and steel that's rusted, steel that's normally embedded in the concrete has become rusted over the years and causes concrete to pop loose which also causes the deck to be a little bit unstable and so we will make it safe and sound. We have a map on our website and we're also communicating through other media but the alternative parking locations during this closure are the courthouse garage where you enter in on Bar Street and the transit center garage where we're standing right now on the rooftop, you can enter the Transit Center garage off of High Street or Vine Street. And those locations will accept the validations from any of the LFUCG departments that you may visit, including the police department. And then the county clerk's office is also continuing to validate as they did in the past when you would have parked in the annex garage. They'll be validating if you end up in the Transit Center garage or the courthouse garage. Keep in mind, the library garage is nearby, but they do not accept the validations from the county clerk's office or LFUCG departments. At this point, we're anticipating the garage to reopen in late spring. This project should go through some point in April, and maybe hopefully thereafter we're opening back up. And with this, we hope to do a grand opening where there'll be new lighting. Obviously the concrete will all be fresh, new and safe, and new garage equipment for the entry and exit system as well. We appreciate everyone's patience during this project, and again we've worked out ways to accommodate parking. We don't want people to feel like they need to avoid downtown because of this during these five months. Thank you. My name is Richard Matthey. I'm the chair of the Friends of McConnell Springs. The Friends are the nonprofit organization that helps fund many of the projects done at the park here. One of our major fundraisers for the year is the wine barrel tasting for McConnell Springs. All of the proceeds from this go to the friends who support projects in the park. This event occurs on March 30th from 11am to 5pm. This is a rain or shine event, so whether it's snowing, raining, sunny, please try to make the event. It's a fun event and it is our major fundraiser for the year. In order to participate in the event, you would go to one of the 17 participating wineries in the area. We did put a restriction on the distance to go to the wineries. Each winery had to be within one hour's drive of New Circle Road. in different directions so somebody going from one end all the way to the other is going to spend a little time in the car. When you get to the winery we'll have a McConnell Springs volunteer there. They will collect the twenty dollars on the first winery you go to. They'll collect your name and an email address. They'll give you a wristband and a wine glass. That wristband and wine glass will be shown at every winery you go to and so you're not charged again. And we're not going to try to collect the names and emails at each of the wineries as we did in the past. And this should speed people along. One of the nice features of this, you get to sample from the barrel or a pitcher of something that came from the barrel of a new wine that they're going to be bottling probably within the next six months so you can get a little taste of it. Here I have a sample of the commemorative glass that we're giving out this year. It states the annual wine barrel tasting for the springs and on the back side of it is the logo for McConnell Springs. This is hopefully to remind you during the year when you're taking a little sample of a wine in the area that hey we do have this event and it's It's likely that if this is your first time, you'll think it's great and you'll want to come back. On our website, www.mcconnellsprings.org, we have the brochure for the event. In that brochure, we'll give you the directions to get to each of the wineries. It'll also give you the telephone number of the winery. The Friends of McConnell Springs is a funding organization that is a non-profit. that we support McConnell Springs. We wanted to build upon that and make an element where everybody can come out and enjoy, you know, folks with, you know, handicap issues. So the new pier has parking that's accessible. It comes right off of that where, you know, the grades are such that you can flow right out onto the pier and get set up. You know, It's really unique, and it's a great place to bring even small children out to come. It's a modular system that goes in. There are 5 by 10 sections that went in really well with ease. The pier itself is not sitting on pylons that are driven into the lake bed. They're sitting on a cast foot, a plate, which really made the installation easy and pretty quick. The whole system went in within a day. It's aluminum. It's going to last. The decking is cedar, so it's built to last. And like I mentioned before, it's built to be accessible. There's a main walk and off that are eddies, so to speak, that make it comfortable for someone to get to that and set up and be able to fish from the eddies. It allows them to move in and get comfortable and have a place to fish from where they're not feeling like they're standing in somebody's way. The modular system allows it to be expanded on. You can add on another 5 by 10 section or two more or three more and just keep creating eddies out the linear center part of it so we can get out further. That was the intent initially. With budget constraints we couldn't develop it fully but we'll be able to in the future. I wanted to get folks out, at least give them a shot to cast out to a deeper spot of the water, to be able to maybe catch more fish. But you never know where they're going to be. They could be on the bank or they could be out there. But I just wanted to give people at least a chance to cast out a little bit further. A lot of people fish just across the way there. We come to that one spot right on Richmond Road, which a lot of them park on Richmond Road, so, and you know, we don't want to see anybody get hurt, so we wanted to give them a place to come, you know, to draw them away from that. So that was one thing that we hoped to do with the new pier. I would like for people who come out to fish to be, for us all to be good stewards of the land and pick up our trash when we leave, you know. It's great to come out here and enjoy this park and the water, but when you come out and you see bait tubs left behind and fishing line out there that's just left for somebody else to pick up or for even the animals to get in trouble with, those people really take that into consideration when they're using our parks. As a young kid, Lexington Parks and Rec always had a place for us to do something. It helped me in a healthy way to compete, but also learn how to be humble in victory and to have some dignity when we lost. Learning to do that allowed me to get to the point where I matured not only as an individual but also as an athlete. I am a product of Lexington Parks and Recreation. When you're in the mood to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in the bluegrass, you don't have to venture far from Lexington to experience nature at its finest. In fact, Lexington has several fabulous nature trails to offer the outdoor enthusiasts. The Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is a remarkably short 12-mile drive from the heart of downtown. This is a unique 734-acre nature sanctuary dedicated to preserving and presenting early Kentucky history and the natural beauty of the Kentucky River Palisades. Over 10 miles of hiking trails provide access to streams, meadows, and woodlands characteristic of the area. There's a lot of fun for everyone when visiting Raven Run, not to mention tremendous photo opportunities. Some opportunities include birding at Raven Run, where you can see over 30 species of birds as they migrate through Kentucky. You'll learn to identify birds by sight and sound during this early morning program. On our Butterflies and Dragonflies Walk, you'll learn how to identify many common species on the wing and learn about insect folklore by viewing a PowerPoint presentation focusing on the life cycles and identification of butterflies and dragonflies. The walk will last about one and a half hours and covers approximately a mile of the trail. If your visit brings you to the area in the fall, enjoy the beautiful colors of the fall season at Raven Run on our Fall Wildflowers Walk. This program will focus on our meadows, which are carpeted in fall wildflowers. Learn about the fascinating full floor connected to these plants and take advantage of great photographic opportunities. And for the kids, try the Little Explorers Nature Tour. Bring your children to Raven Run for our children's program. Activities include a short nature hike and art projects with all supplies provided. Our next nature trail destination brings us to McConnell Springs Nature Park, a 26-acre natural wonder hidden within an industrial complex in Lexington. Heralded as the site where Lexington was named, it was settled in 1775 by William McConnell. Two miles of trails wander around the sinking springs, vegetation, stone fences, and vestiges of historical buildings. McConnell Springs boasts more than 130 species of plants and numerous species of urban wildlife that reside at or visit the park. There are a variety of hands-on activities for all ages at McConnell Springs Visitor Center. Here are just a few. You can learn to carve a wooden cooking spoon or a wooden dough bowl with the Lexington Woodcarver's Guild. Make your own walking stick and join us for a hike. or the whole family. Children 10 and younger make bird feeders and learn about the birds that use them. In addition to the passive visitor who just wants to come out here and take a hike, we have a variety of scheduled or structured programs for the visitor. We've got weekend programs for the general public that are usually nature or history related. And we also have junior naturalist programs that are geared towards the youth 10 and younger. McConnell Springs and Raven Run provide natural, cultural and historical education opportunities for visitors when they visit Lexington. So keep it fresh. The leadership of Parks and Recreation give us the opportunity to have these great facilities for economic development, for quality of life, to be out in the open, to be able to do things as families. The investment that we make as a community in our parks is so important for making a great city even better. My name is Jill Shanae Wilson and I am the Community Center Director here at William Wells Brown. This actually is a different type of setting for Parks and Recreation because we're located in a community school. And with that being said, that means that the school goes on during the daytime and then in the evening up until 9 p.m. the community center is open for activities for our youth, adults, and seniors. If you are looking for a cool place to come work out, get physically fit, network, and meet people, this is the place to be. Monday through Friday we have activities from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and then Saturdays from 10 to 2. So on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays our youth come in at 6 o'clock. Elementary students are engaged in organized sports games. We have boys' group, girls' group. We do arts and crafts. We have cooking classes, cool workshops for self-esteem and leadership skills. And then on Tuesdays and Thursdays, our adults come in. And there's activities scheduled for adults from 6 to 7. On Tuesday nights is aerobics. And then on Thursday nights from 6 to 7 is Zumba. And usually after those two classes, we have some cool activities. if you want to do boot camp, kind of a little more higher intense activity. Also, we have yoga. We do a support weight loss group through the health department. We also have adult cooking classes. We do cooking classes for our youth as well. So if you want to live a healthy lifestyle, this is the place to come to, William Wells Brown Community Center. The coolest thing is everything here is free, free of charge. Right now we're standing in the weight room. This is our adult wellness room, and we have a few pieces of equipment. We have our treadmills, our elliptical, and our exercise bikes. We do free weights, and we have little stations of medicine balls and kettle balls. Basically, this room is filled to capacity starting around 5.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. We have two personal trainers and another staff that comes in, and they do intense work on different tonings, and if you want to target a particular area of your body, If you just want to lose weight or tone up, then you can come here and get those services for free. Actually, there's been a lot of people coming in since we've been open, and they have been very pleased. Each year we sponsor a weight loss challenge, and I work closely with the health department. They are my partner. They provide free resources, workshops, health literacy information. We also work with Central Baptist Health Works, and they come in and do a lot of our assessments for our weight loss challenge. We've serviced over, I'd say a thousand people in the last five years and we lost a lot of pounds as well. But this is a great place to come if you want to just relax, enjoy yourself, work out, participate in some of our classes. It's for the whole family and like I said before, no cost involved. Everything is free. People come from all through the city. We're located in the East End area, 548 East 6th Street. but everyone that lives in the whole city of Lexington and surrounding counties come and participate. A lot of people come after work and work out. They wait for their children to get out of school. We've had a lot of parents to come in. And the cool thing about it is if you want to work out and you have children, you can still come and work out. We have staff that can accommodate your kids with a lot of cool activities to keep them busy as well. And then they can be engaged in the youth activities while everyone is having a great time. If you made your New Year's resolution, like a lot of people have, in the beginning of the year, I want to work out, I want to get back in shape, well, don't think anymore. I'm the director of media services for the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau. I'm not sure what you're doing. Well, Visit Lex has a couple different purposes. All of them are to bring people into town, into Lexington, whether it's a convention or a meeting or maybe a family reunion, military reunions. We have a whole staff of salespeople that are out there looking for meetings and conventions to bring into Lexington. And then we have the visitor side where we're looking to bring leisure tourists into town. So the overall goal is always put people in those hotel rooms overnight and drive tourism in Lexington. We were down at the corner of Rose and Vine for about 17 years, and that was a great location for us. But we have a new president now, Mr. Jim Browder, and he wanted us to be closer to kind of the hub of downtown where the hotels are, the convention center, that sort of thing. Thought we'd see more foot traffic right here in Victorian Square, and so far that has proved to be true. We worked with Solid Light, who's over in Louisville, to help design this space. They've done some other very prominent locations around the state, some of the bourbon distilleries, Heaven Hill and Maker's Mark they were also involved with. So we had a great team of designers over there that helped us put together a center that really showcases the horses, the history, the bourbon, and a new section that we have called Explore My Lex, which is everything from restaurants to festivals and events, different things that happen throughout the year, that are of interest to both locals and people who are visiting us. Well, certainly we always welcome people here at the Visitor's Center, so just come on down and see us. We're open Monday through Friday from 8.30 to 5, and also on Saturday from 10 to 5, and then during the summer months also on Sundays. You can also go online 24 hours a day. We have a very robust website at www.visitlex.com. We've got a lot of great interactive displays here at the Visitor Center. Several touchscreens that showcase different areas of interest. This one obviously is for bourbon. You can learn all sorts of things about bourbon. see some videos of the local distilleries, that sort of thing. You can even come over here, and if you'd like to smell what one of the bourbons smells like, that's a really fun thing for folks to do and a great interactive tool for us. Behind you here, we have a replica of a working still, which I think is a lot of fun. Bourbon, of course, is a big driver for tourism here in the central part of Kentucky, so we definitely wanted to get that information out there for people. This screen over here is all about the history in Central Kentucky. So when you click on that, it'll take you to, again, a library of films that we put together on different areas around town. We have all sorts of information for folks to pick up and take with them. Any kind of attraction that they'd like to go to, we can help them with that. We also are selling some merchandise here now in our new location. We're very proud to have a Lexington KYT shirt now. We also have blue ones for the kids. and those I think have been quite popular. Now something that everybody wants to do when they're visiting a new destination I think is eat food that's local to the area. It allows forecasters a better idea of what's actually out there and can help keep you safe. Current radar technology transmits and receives information in the horizontal direction, which is very limited. Dual polarization technology, in addition to the horizontal, transmits and receives vertical energy, which allows forecasters to get information about the size, shape, and phase of the precipitation. We can use that information to better determine the precipitation type to expect at your given location. There you have it. This new technology is currently being installed in radars across the country and is already being used by National Weather Service forecasters to produce better, more accurate forecasts. Advances in forecasting allow the NOAA National Weather Service to predict severe weather before there's even a cloud in the sky. Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches give you advance notice that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When your area is in a watch, be sure to stay alert for changing weather. Remember, a watch is not a warning. A warning is only issued when severe weather is about to strike. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, monitors weather conditions across the United States. They issue daily forecasts showing areas of the country that are likely to experience severe weather. In the hours before storms form, the Storm Prediction Center discusses the weather with National Weather Service Forecast Offices within the areas at risk. The Storm Prediction Center then issues a watch to notify people in those areas to stay alert for severe weather. A watch also includes information about what type of weather you might see and the chances of it actually occurring. The risk level can range from a few storms with hail and high winds to a particularly dangerous situation when deadly tornadoes could occur. The most important thing you can do when a watch is issued is to stay alert for developing storms and understand your risk. Be sure to tune in to your local news for updated weather information. You can also get instant weather alerts from NOAA Weather Radio. Watches also provide an opportunity to review your family emergency plan as well as check your disaster supplies kit. When the risk increases and severe weather moves in, you'll be ready if a warning is issued. I brought these two here today to talk about the widening and construction projects along Leestown Road. So first we're going to talk to Joshua about the widening of Leastown Road. Hi, Joshua. Thanks for coming. You're welcome. Thanks for having me. So can you tell me a little bit about the project and what instigated the project? The amount of traffic that's on Leastown on the two-lane facility, it backs up generally at least twice a day, every day. And there's also some safety concerns with some site distance issues. And so we have it in our plan to try to improve the safety and the capacity on the roadway. And we're going to make it a four-lane facility with bike lanes on there as well. And so that's where it came from. And was there community input involved in the planning and design and that sort of thing? Yes, we had multiple public meetings to discuss the different typical, the type of roadway we put out there. So we gathered input over several years before we went to finish our final design. And I assume the bike lanes was inspired as well from community input and groups. Yes, that was one of the things the public chose to add or would like, wanted to add to it. And so we were able to accommodate that. Good. And can you tell me a little bit about the timeline of the project, when neighbors and residents can start to see construction begin and how long the construction will last and when they might see a completed project? Well, we think that the construction should begin sometime early this summer. We will actually be letting or we will be putting that construction with lease down at the same time as Citation Project. Right. And so we will begin those projects, so there might actually be construction on Citation Boulevard before there will be on Leastown. There will be continuing utility relocations on Leastown as there is right now. Right. I've seen some of that so far, the poles being relocated from KU. Yes, and so then we anticipate it to last. Possibly it will run into 2015 is when we're hoping it will, towards the end of 2015, we're hoping it will be open for full traffic and everything finished on it. And so the widening actually begins where and will end where? We're widening from Greendale Road, and we take the full four lanes all the way to Masterson Station Park, which is Ruffian Way, and then after that we'll start tying down to the two-lane facility. So it actually ends a little bit past Bracktown Lane. And then they just merge back into the two-lane highway. Okay, great. And so you mentioned Citation Boulevard. So, Andrew, do you want to talk a little bit about that and how this project blends in with Citation? Yes, ma'am. Citation Boulevard, it's been on the city of Lexington's plans for quite a few years, probably all the way back into the 80s. We originally did environmental assessment, and that was done in the early 90s. Citation Boulevard was originally designed to be a road to relieve traffic from the northeastern section of Lexington, which was opened up for development. Currently, we have constructed Phase 1, or Section 1, and that went from Newtown Pike to Georgetown Road. The section that we're currently getting ready to construct is from Georgetown Road, and it goes over to Leestown Road and then realigns Alexandria. So that intersection at Alexandria will be relocated, or will Citation line up directly with the existing Alexandria? Alexandria, that intersection will be relocated. Okay. Probably about, I'd say, 300 to 350 feet further out of town. Okay. Okay. And what's your timeline with that project as well, the beginning and how long construction might last and when you think it'll be finished? As Mr. Samples had said, it will be bid at the same time as the Leastown Road widening. Okay. And the two projects will work in tandem and the construction will go on at the same time. Most of that construction probably will not impact traffic since it is a new boulevard. and besides having people drive down Buck Lane and Mercer Road or Greendale Road, you might not see the construction unless you look off to your left or your right. So hopefully that will have a smaller impact than the Leastown Road widening. Yeah, we didn't actually talk about that, Joshua. So what are the impacts that people might experience during the construction? I'm assuming there will be lane closures and sections of the road maybe? What we anticipate, the plan as of now, is that we will maintain two lanes of traffic, one each direction, and turn lanes at all the intersections. Some of those turn lanes are going to be shorter during construction than they are now, but they'll still be turn lanes. And so there'll be small times of possible lane closures, but it will be constricted to the middle of the day, not during rush hour. but our attempt is to maintain what's out there now with the two lanes in both directions. The transportation cabinet does have some information on their website about the location of the proposed project and kind of a little bit about the funding. If you want more specific information like how it would affect a piece of property or how long turn lanes would be, it's probably best to either contact Joshua or myself directly. Okay. As a young kid, Lexington Parks and Rec always had a place for us to do something. It helped me in a healthy way to compete, but also learn how to be humble in victory and to have some dignity when we lost. Learning to do that allowed me to get to the point where I matured not only as an individual, but also as an athlete. I am a product of Lexington Parks and Recreation. Hi, welcome back. Again, I'm Siobhan Akers, the 2nd District Council Member. And joining me now is Ben Edlin, Vice President of HDR Engineering, and the engineering firm that is overseeing the double diamond that will be installed at the intersection of Lee's Town and New Circle Road as part of the New Circle Road widening project. Thanks for joining me today. Glad to be here. So can you tell me a little bit of the history of this project and why it was needed and what brought it about? The overall project, which is really the widening of New Circle Road, which brought it all about, is obviously congestion on that end of town. Anybody traveling during rush hour along New Circle Road and Leach Town Road understands just how much traffic's out there. So they saw it as very important to get out there and get ahead of when it starts breaking down. And so why, I think the million-dollar question that a lot of people have asked me is why the double diamond versus any other option at the intersection there? That's a great question and one we've been asked a lot. The double diamond, we compared that to just upgrading the existing interchange, then also looked at about four other different options. And when we compared this running our traffic models, we came to an understanding that the double diamond provided a lot better traffic movement and capacity for this project. So it by far exceeded the other alternatives that we looked at. And I know that there was a public meeting a few months ago in November, I believe, at Least High Middle School. Have you had other public meetings and shared the information and the project to garner public input? Well, we do have a webpage that is out and people can get on and view. But the public meeting was the first public input that we had. And we started this project back in earnest about last May 1st. By the time we got our alternatives together and worked with our project team, the District 7 office, we had to get something on paper to show the community. So the public input we got was the one public meeting we had out of Leastown. And do you expect to have any more public sharing information meetings? I think as the project goes on, as it unfolds, like I say, we'll keep regular updates on the website. And then also, as the project impacts different communities, we may go back out to them and have specific public involvements with those neighborhood associates. Yeah, that's what I was going to say, maybe at neighborhood meetings and the like. What is your timeline? What do you expect construction to begin? How long will traffic be impacted on Lee's Town at that intersection? and when can we see completion? Well, the actual widening of New Circle Road should begin sometime early in 2014, and then the Leastown Road Double Diamond, construction on that could begin as early as late 2014. And we look at the widening of New Circle Road would take probably two years to complete. Can you tell viewers exactly where that will begin and end, the widening as well? Yeah, the widening of the new circle begins just through the east of the Bursells Road interchange. It'll tie into the Bursells Road interchange, and it'll be widened six lanes all the way around to where it's currently widened near the Georgetown Road interchange. And then Leastown Road goes from there in front of the town center and goes out the Greendown Road, and it ties into the Leastown Road widening project. And so the double diamond will go through the bridge, I mean, or the overpass, under the overpass, similar to the Harrisburg Road diamond. That's right. It'll be very similar. Just some of the details will be different, but it'll be very similar to the Harrisburg Road double diamond that's in place today. Okay. Great. And that wraps it up for us today. And we are here to talk about the budget cuts that the governor has proposed in the Childhood Assistance Program, or Child Care Assistance Program, at the state level. So, Jack, could you first start out by giving us kind of an overview of not only the program, but the role that community action plays in Lexington as it relates to these programs? Yes. Let me first start out by thanking you for getting the local government's attention to the problem. Thank you. It makes a big difference when local government can speak to an issue like this to those of us who are involved in it all the time. It's not a proposed cut. It has been signed off on. And there are two programs that are being cut. People often confuse them. One is kinship care, where if for some reason a parent is unable to take care of their child, they're incarcerated or some other tragedy is going on, the state will provide financial assistance to grandparents who often cannot afford to take on that burden, so the child stays in the family. And the proposal is to eliminate kinship care. Now let's talk about that for a second, because a couple of things about that that don't make sense to me is, number one, the cabinet's main goal has always been to keep families together. That's correct. And this funding was specifically put in place to help that happen. That's exactly right. They had a strategic plan process and they made that a goal. They set aside money to make sure that children stayed in their families. And so if they take this funding away and a grandparent is not financially able then to take care of their grandchildren, then those children will end up in foster care or some other part of the cabinet. Most likely foster care, but some children have to be institutionalized because there's nobody who will take them as a foster child. Okay, which means those programs are going to cost even more to the taxpayer than kinship care. They do cost more. Kinship care hardly takes care of the full cost for the child. It simply helps the grandparent, who's probably on a fixed income in most cases, with the extra expenses. Okay, and I know that even the president talked about in the State of the Union address last night that every dollar that we spend in early childhood care saves us $7 on the back end in terms of high school graduation rates, incarceration rates, and all kinds of other things that people end up in the system needing help with. There's no dispute about that. The research is there. It is solid. We do a lot of work on measuring outcomes on our work here. we know that always 90% of the children, four-year-olds who leave us are school-ready. Children benefit from being in an environment that's designed and prepared to make them ready for the rest of their lives. Sure. And we all know, if you have any work at all with early childhood development, that those first three years of life are phenomenally important for the development of a child's brain. and their sort of aptitudes and their countenance and the way that they carry themselves. Yeah, the brain research data is there, and there's no doubt about that. You surprised me earlier today, though, when you showed me some data on the huge difference in IQs of children who participate in a good early childhood experience and those who don't. Absolutely. And we will put that up on the slide for people to see that at home. So now talk a little bit about the second half of that program that's being cut. That's the Child Care Assistance Program. Kentucky said to low-income women when welfare reform occurred, if you will get training or an education and you will get a job, if your income is not sufficient to keep you above water, the state will do things to help you. And one of those things was to make sure you can get quality, affordable childcare. We've got to remember, these are parents who may be net in a month $1,200. quality child care costs about $500 a month. You don't have to do the math. Then you can't afford to pay for the apartment and also the car and the gas and the food. Sure. And so obviously we want parents to become productive members of society. That's why those changes are made in the welfare program, so that people were able to get an education or take on a job that hopefully will transition them into a better-paying job over time. and at that point in time then they can take care of themselves completely and be self-sufficient. But if we take away this help along the way, then it seems like we're basically shooting our foot, shooting ourselves in the foot. We are, and I think we're breaking a promise we made. I recently had a meeting back down at Urban County Government and one mom with tears in her eyes say, I did everything people asked me to do, and all of a sudden they're not keeping their side of the bargain. And that's one thing that I've always been a sticker about is outcome measurements and making sure that if we ask someone to go through a program, that when they go through that program, they're better for having gone through it. And this is a situation, like you said, we've made a promise to people that if you do certain things, we'll be there to help you along the way so that you become self-sufficient. And so talk about the shock that has gone across the community in terms of how quickly this change will take place. Well, it gives people no chance, no time really. On April 1, people will not even be allowed to apply for child care assistance. After April 1, if you're already receiving it and your anniversary for recertification comes up, you'll be allowed to continue, but they cut the maximum income allowed by 33%. Explain that a little bit. So they changed the income requirements for being eligible for the program. They pushed us down so low that we will rank 50th in the nation in terms of the maximum allowable income level allowed for child care. Wow. You know, we always say, thank God for Mississippi. People in Jackson are probably saying right now, thank God for Kentucky. Right. So when we talk about a state that cares about and values education, and we all understand clearly, like you said, The evidence is there. The analytic data is there to substantiate that everything that we can do to help a child be ready to start school helps further their progress while they're in school and on throughout their life. I wonder what the superintendents across the country, across the state, are thinking about how this is going to impact their kindergarten classes and their first grade classes moving forward. I've had discussions with superintendents over the years, and they all indicate that one of the ways to deal with the whole achievement gap is to make sure kids come in school ready. And they can take a look at the income of the families of the children coming in, because if they apply for a free lunch, they're low income. Sure. And they test children coming in, and they know which children had an early childhood experience and which ones didn't. And we're basically saying to them, we're going to put you right back where you were 20 years ago. Right. So talk a little bit in the time we have remaining about what the folks listening can do to help change the governor's mind about the cuts that he's made. I think people have to speak up loud and clear. Send emails. Make phone calls to the governor's office. There's a group of parents right now that are using paper bibs and writing notes on them and taking them to the state capitol. The governor has the power to change this. The governor can go look somewhere else in the $9 billion budget and find something else that, in many cases, could be delayed. A construction project, in most cases, it won't hurt to delay a new building for two years or three years. Okay, and then what is community action going to do to help ensure that we can get this decision reversed? We're doing a lot of work communicating with parents. We're building a statewide coalition, as you know, because we've asked you to come join us. We're going to speak before the Health and Welfare Committee of the General Assembly. Yes. I'm not going to stop until there's just absolutely nothing else we can do. And I appreciate that. And let me just say that Jack called me a couple weeks ago when he first heard about this and asked me what I thought about it and would I help get involved. And I want to thank the Irving County Council. We did a resolution a couple weeks ago that was passed unanimously, and the mayor is going to sign that speaking to our state legislature that the city of Lexington is not happy with the cuts that they've made. And one of the things that I said in that conversation was that these cuts are not conducive with the values of the people of this great commonwealth. And so we hope that the governor will listen. We hope that the legislature will listen and that they will reverse this decision that's already been made. And we're going to take a break, and shortly we're going to come back and hear from a grandparent who will be negatively impacted by this decision, as well as a single father who will be negatively impacted by this decision. Welcome back to the Myers Report. Today we're standing here at Community Action Council with Ms. Doris Perkins. Hi. And Ms. Perkins, thank you for coming in today. I wanted to ask you a few questions about the governor's proposed cuts in child care. And which program are you involved in right now? The Kinship Care. The Kinship Care program. Could you explain a little bit about that program and what that means to you and your grandson? Well, the Kinship Care helps me make sure that he gets the daycare, the clothes, the food, everything that he gets, Kinship Care helps me get. And, I mean, in all honesty, without that program, I'm not sure how I can manage to do it and make sure that he gets, you know, everything that he needs. So if that cut happens as proposed by the governor, you have maybe a few different choices that you could entertain And would you be able to continue working? I do not see how I could continue to work. You know, I don't work a 9 to 5 Monday through Friday job. I have two different centers that Braylon goes to to get what he needs so I can work. And without the kinship care, I mean, I'm not going to be able to afford to work. Okay. So one of the other options would be foster care? I mean, ultimately, you know, if I can't take care of him, he has to get what he needs. And if that meant foster care, then, you know, that's last resort. But ultimately, it's all about protecting him and getting him what he needs. So if that's what it must be, then it must be. And ultimately what we're looking for, and I believe one of the Cabinet's main missions, is to keep families together as long as possible when there's a vital opportunity to do that. And it sounds like to me that's what this program does for you? Oh, 100%. I mean, you know, my children are grown. I took care of them, and now I'm raising my grandson. And ultimately that's what I want is to keep him with his family. Right. But without the kinship care, I'm not sure if I can do that. Okay. Well, thank you for coming in today. And we are going to continue to work on this issue and see if we can get that changed so that the state government comes up with another solution to its budget problems. Exactly. I think there's a lot more things that could be cut besides the programs that help those of us that didn't ask to be put in this situation in the first place. Thank you very much. Thank you. Welcome back to the Myers Report. We're here again at Community Action Council, and we have Mr. Michael Austin with us today. Thank you, Michael, for coming in. Thank you, sir. And we want to talk to you a little bit about the child care subsidy that you're getting to help educate your child. And just give us a little bit of background about yourself. First of all, my name is Michael Austin, native of Lexington, Kentucky, born and raised here. I am a single father who recently last year obtained custody of my youngest son. And I also do support and help raise another child in another household as well. So I'm pretty busy. Absolutely. Being a father. Absolutely. And we like that, being a great, responsible father. And so the Child Care Assistance Program helps you how? It actually provides daycare assistance for me during the day, so I'll be eligible to go to work, therefore to support family and whoever else I need to support underneath my roof. I do work awkward hours, so therefore it does help me out a lot with the daycare because, you know, babysitters are hard to find these days. Absolutely, and people that are competent that you trust with your child. Yes, sir, yes, sir. Well, if this subsidy that the governor is paying on cutting, if these cuts go through, how will that impact you and your son? That would really have a major impact. First of all, it would have a major impact on the household as far as the bills and stuff getting paid because, first of all, I would have a babysitter. I wouldn't be able to work my 40 hours a week. Therefore, the bills wouldn't be paid. The lights wouldn't be cut on. And first and foremost, I guess, support wouldn't be paid. So therefore, I'd be absent in my child's life because I'd be incarcerated if I didn't pay my child support. Right. So, thank you. So this program enables you to be gainfully employed as well as be a father actively involved in your children's lives. Yes, sir. And so I think we all know and understand the value of that. Yes, sir. And so we are going to continue to try to work with the state and ensure that the legislature does not follow through with the cuts the governor plans on making. Please. And as you can see, we've got an issue here that's really important to our community. It's going to have a very negative economic impact to our community if parents have to leave their jobs or grandparents leave their jobs in order to be able to take care of their family members. But also it's going to create more problems down the road and more expense in dealing with the aftermath of this decision. We encourage you to get in touch with Community Action, to call your council members, also to call your legislators and the governor's office. Any opportunity you get to do that would be fantastic. Hello, I'm Peggy Henson, 11th District Council Member, and I am here today with Betty and Mishani, hope I pronounced that correctly, with the Village Branch Library. I'm very excited to be here, Betty, because this library provides so much to our community, and that was my reason for wanting to come here today and have you tell us about the many, many different programs. And we'll start out, I guess. Can you give me a little bit of history about the library, when it opened? I'd be glad to, and thank you for being here today. We actually opened in 2004, so we're really, it's unbelievable that next year we'll be 10 years old. We opened, like I said, 2004. And of course, the Cardinal Valley community, for many years, the two closest libraries were the Beaumont Library and the Downtown Library. As the community has grown and changed, traffic patterns have also changed in Lexington. And one of the many conversations that many residents had with the library was that they really needed a library in this area, particularly the traffic. Like I mentioned, a lot of people don't like to go downtown and the parking structure is a little overwhelming. And then the Beaumont Center has grown so much that particularly older seniors who have been part of the Cardinal Valley community for many years have found that there's just way too much traffic on Harrodsburg Road and have really made wonderful use of this library. So like I said, in early 2000, the Bookmobile, which is part of the library extension department or outreach, had been serving different stops here in the Cardinal Valley area, among them the village park, or the Valley Park. Valley Park. and they have seen a big change in the number of children in the area and a number of new families in the area. So the library began looking for a location, found this location here that's part of a shopping center. This is the only facility that the library rents rather than owns. And we've grown in the last 10 years. We have, gosh, this last month we had over 10,000 items checked out, which is a lot for us. And we probably have anywhere from 600 people come in every single day to the library. And there are days that's over 1,000, so it's a busy little place. Yeah. And you expanded since opening, right, in 2004 you expanded? Yes. When we first opened, it was this main area of the library. It was a small section. Correct. And again, when we opened, no one really knew how the community would respond. Many of the Latino community members, we weren't sure would they use the library or not. So everyone has, and so we found quickly that we had no seating in the evenings, no place to put people. So when Dan's Pond Shop moved down the street and built their own facility, the library was able to lease that area. And so we expanded making the public computer area larger, a meeting room, a multipurpose meeting room. So it's given us actually double the space. Well, I know I can't say enough nice things about this library and what it means to the surrounding residents. They are very much a need and you provide that so well. And I know that I've heard that this library is for Spanish-speaking residents. That is absolutely not true. We know that just like the surrounding neighborhoods, it is very diverse. Correct. And many, many people use this library in age and economics. It's a very diverse branch. we basically reflect the population of Lexington. We have every demographic from lots of families with babies and seniors. We have a lot of Latinos. We have many, many African-American families, children, and then we have many, many longtime Anglo residents of Lexington and new residents of Lexington. So just like Lexington, Carnot Valley continues to change and grow. We are part of the Lexington Public Library system. So we are one of the six locations in Lexington. We provide all the same services. We have the same hours. And, you know, we do have bilingual staff here because many of our residents need help. They're learning English. Sometimes the first language for many people is Spanish. And the other side to it is we have many Lexingtonians who want to learn Spanish. So they come here for classes. They also check out our audios, our DVDs. They want to listen and learn Spanish. So just as many people we have learning English, on the other hand, we have many people interested in learning Spanish. Yeah, that's really great, I think. And I know that the entire staff here, in order to accommodate anyone that is Spanish-speaking, are bilingual. Just about. Just about. Just there's a couple of staff people who are not fluent in Spanish. But they know enough to be able to welcome people. But, of course, English is the language that we train on, that we do our computer work on, so that it continues to be the primary language of the staff. The other thing that I forgot to mention is because we all have so many children in this area, We have a lot of activities, and I think we're probably going to go there next. Right. I was wondering about your homework help. Well. And I know you have some grant money or. Yes, yes, yes. When we began in 2004, when we opened our doors, we found many parents coming in with your children, asking, can you help our children with their homework? We cannot read either. Perhaps they could not read in English or their reading skills were very poor, even in their own native languages. Or they just felt overwhelmed. You know, it's been many years for me since they were in school and they weren't sure if they were helping their children correctly. So we kind of scrambled and decided that this was one of the niches that we wanted to fill for the community. And so we began a volunteer homework program. Since then, it has grown so that we partnered with Fayette County School System through a grant, the 21st Century Grant, which Martin Luther King Academy was instrumental in getting. Actually, the grant went to Martin Luther King Academy, which, as you may know, is an alternative school for many students who either have had behavioral problems or just not making it through the school, through regular school. And so they partnered for the same reason, to find a way to have these kids stay in school, succeed. and so they are able to get us paid teachers so we every afternoon Monday through Thursday we have two teachers who are qualified and certified and know what they're doing and we particularly have them help the older kids because many of our volunteers can help the younger kids a lot easier we also have high school students and college students who are part of our volunteer effort. They do community service in the case of many of our high school students. And then college kids often they're either doing it for internship or service points or just personal interests. Perhaps they want to practice a little bit of Spanish or they just want the experience of working with kids. So it's a very active program. We do all kinds of activities with them as well through the 21st century. It's not all academic. We want them to enjoy anything related to school, plus we want them to have a safe place to come to here in the community. That's very important. I know that any time I've been here in the evenings, It is wall-to-wall kids. Yes. So I know they wouldn't be coming here if they didn't enjoy it. And the parents feel comfortable with them being here. Yes. And, you know, it's kind of a two-edged sword. We want them here, yet we have to maintain a sense of balance. And because we are a library, but it's a wonderfully used library. It's very vibrant. and not only homework because I want to also of course our collection, our books our videos, our DVDs, our audios those are part of magazines those are part of what makes us a library we also have computers for both children and adults free access computers to all residents and we provide other services as well Right, and I know on the many, many programs that I see here, it's like there's tax help going on right now. Tax help, we're very fortunate. We partnered with United Way this year, and they do taxes two days a week. I think this is our fifth year partnering with them, and they come in on Mondays and Thursdays to prepare taxes and bring new people into the library who might otherwise not come in. So yes, it's another service that we provide. And recently, most recently, I think, well, I should say a few months ago, there was a mural that was done on the outside of the building. Can you briefly tell me just a little bit? Yes, that mural was part funded by the Lexington Arts, by Lexington Public Library, by the 21st Century Fayette County School System, and then I want to say water quality. Yes. Environmental. And sustainability. Sustainability. And so, yes, it was a mural designed by teens, put up by teens, and we're very proud of it. Yeah. Very proud of it. And as I talk about teens and kids, you know, one of our most important things is our summer reading program. That's something that we do every year. it'll happen again this year like clockwork and we encourage it's for everyone adults children and teens so look at that when it comes thank you I think we're about to run out of time Betty but I really appreciate you taking the time to tell everyone about these many programs here at the library and please stick around with us for a while we need you definitely in this area Thank you. I'm Gary Means with the Lexington Parking Authority. My name is Gary Means. I'm the executive director with the Lexington and Fayette County Parking Authority. The renovation of the annex garage is a total of an eight month project. The first three months we were able to keep about 50% of the garage open, but we've had to close it now and the last five months it will be closed completely to assist the contractors in being able to get all of the renovation work done in a safe manner where we don't have other vehicles in the area where they're jackhammering and creating dust or debris. This project is about a $3.1 million project and most of the work is replacement of bad concrete and steel that's rusted. Steel that's normally embedded in the concrete has become rusted over the years and causes concrete to pop loose which also causes the deck to be a little bit unstable and so we will make it safe and sound. We have a map on our website and we're also communicating through other media. The alternative parking locations during this closure are the courthouse garage, where you enter in on Barr Street, and the transit center garage, where we're standing right now on the rooftop. You can enter the transit center garage off of High Street or Vine Street. And those locations will accept the validations from any of the LFUCG departments that you may visit, including the police department. And then the county clerk's office is also continuing to validate, as they did in the past when you would have parked in the annex garage, they'll be validating if you end up in the transit center garage or the courthouse garage. And keep in mind, the library garage is nearby, but they do not accept the validations from the county clerk's office or LFUCG departments. At this point, we're anticipating the garage to reopen in late spring. This project should go through some point in April and maybe hopefully thereafter we're opening back up. And with this we hope to do a grand opening where there will be new lighting. Obviously the concrete will all be fresh, new and safe. And new garage equipment for the entry and exit system as well. We appreciate everyone's patience during this project. and again we've worked out ways to accommodate parking. We don't want people to feel like they need to avoid downtown because of this during these five months. There is plenty of parking available and we've worked out arrangements at the Transit Center Garage and the Courthouse Garage as well. I guess what we're excited about even though it's a bit of an interruption to folks is that it's going to be safe and clean and well lit and a great garage to park in once we reopen in the late spring. In the area of the annex garage there's not a lot of retail, there is some retail in that area but a lot of our retail are more down towards the Lexington Convention Center, the Civic Center shops and the Victorian Square shops and so parking in that area is not going to be affected by this closure and like always we welcome everybody to come down and visit our downtown retail shops during the holidays. The Lexington Art League and Parks and Recreation have had a long established relationship. We do offer the Woodland Art Fair in partnership with Parks and Recreation each year. They provide unbelievable support for that event. We are very fortunate to have a very thriving and vibrant community that really has grown through the arts in many different ways. Parks and Recreation is a great supporter of the arts in our community. Dual polarization technology is a major upgrade to the current radar system. It allows forecasters a better idea of what's actually out there and can help keep you safe. Current radar technology transmits and receives information in the horizontal direction, which is very limited. Dual polarization technology, in addition to the horizontal, transmits and receives vertical energy, which allows forecasters to get information about the size, shape, and phase of the precipitation. We can use that information to better determine the precipitation type to expect at your given location. There you have it. This new technology is currently being installed in radars across the country and is already being used by National Weather Service forecasters to produce better, more accurate forecasts. Advances in forecasting allow the NOAA National Weather Service to predict severe weather before there's even a cloud in the sky. Severe thunderstorm and tornado watches give you advance notice that conditions are favorable for dangerous weather. When your area is in a watch, be sure to stay alert for changing weather. Remember, a watch is not a warning. A warning is only issued when severe weather is about to strike. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, monitors weather conditions across the United States. They issue daily forecasts showing areas of the country that are likely to experience severe weather. In the hours before storms form, the Storm Prediction Center discusses the weather with National Weather Service Forecast Offices within the areas at risk. The Storm Prediction Center then issues a watch to notify people in those areas to stay alert for severe weather. A watch also includes information about what type of weather you might see and the chances of it actually occurring. The risk level can range from a few storms with hail and high winds to a particularly dangerous situation when deadly tornadoes could occur. The most important thing you can do when a watch is issued is to stay alert for developing storms and understand your risk. Be sure to tune in to your local news for updated weather information. You can also get instant weather alerts from NOAA Weather Radio. Watches also provide an opportunity to review your family emergency plan as well as check your disaster supplies kit. When the risk increases and severe weather moves in, you'll be ready if a warning is issued. And, Devin, an area of the business that is growing beautifully is Mother of the Bridegroom. Mother of the Bridegroom is so, they're younger and peppier, so they don't really want to look like the grandmother, even though we dress lots of sassy little grandmothers. But that is something that we really take a lot of pride in and enjoy being part of those special days. It's almost as though there's always a special event going on here in the community. There's a fundraiser. There's Art in Bloom coming up. There's the Heart Ball. And we keep track of where dresses are going in terms of we don't want you to show up with the same dress on. So we really honor that feature that we're able to do and have a great selection, as always. You can just look around. There's no lack of beautiful dresses here. Notice a ton of gorgeous accessories and purses and dresses for all sorts of occasions. So where are you located downtown? We're on the corner of Upper and Maxwell. It is a destination, and it's definitely worth it. We are Bella Rose, big city fashion and small town charm. It's come on in, kick your shoes off, and stay a while. The right dress is here for you, whatever your event might be. We are open 10 to 6, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thursday is our late day. So what do you like about being located downtown? Well, there's so much opportunity down here. I mean, just when I came to this corner 33 years ago, it was very different. With all the condominiums and all the downtown life, just the whole pulse of downtown is so energetic. I mean, I love Farmer's Market. I love seeing the families walk, parking and walking on the weekends. You know, all of the camaraderie with our sports, with the basketball. You know, it's just, we always enjoy that and always get new people in that have never, that have been by and never made it into the shop. And just the convenience of being downtown. I mean, it's beautiful. The tree-lined streets and just, it's just magical. The historical neighborhood is one of the most beautiful and sought after in the community. Absolutely. Being close to the universities and, again, in two seconds, being downtown. We have a Shoshana trunk show coming up, which I think this will be the fourth or possibly fifth year in a row that we have a great successful outcome from that. That gets us rolling into Derby. Easter, you can get your Easter dress from Shoshana. We have shipments of Millie coming in. We have, of course, Keeneland, graduation, prom, and then those famous two seconds, two minutes of the Kentucky Derby, which we are very well represented at the Derby with the custom hats and one-of-a-kind outfits. So we're just very excited to be celebrating 33 years in business and just feel so blessed that we have the privilege of dressing so many women. And we're just grateful for this community and surrounding communities that we have, the repeat clientele that we do. And the age range, that's quite special. Absolutely. I'm Nikki Heckelbeck. I'm the director of media services for the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau. I'm sorry. Visit Lex has a couple different purposes. All of them are to bring people into town, into Lexington, whether it's a convention or a meeting or maybe a family reunion, military reunions. We have a whole staff of salespeople that are out there looking for meetings and conventions to bring into Lexington. and then we have the visitor side where we're looking to bring leisure tourists into town. So the overall goal is always put people in those hotel rooms overnight and drive tourism in Lexington. We were down at the corner of Rose and Vine for about 17 years, and that was a great location for us. But we have a new president now, Mr. Jim Browder, and he wanted us to be closer to kind of the hub of downtown where the hotels are, the convention center, that sort of thing. thought we'd see more foot traffic right here in Victorian Square, and so far that has proved to be true. We worked with Solid Light, who's over in Louisville, to help design this space. They've done some other very prominent locations around the state, some of the bourbon distilleries, Heaven Hill and Maker's Mark, they were also involved with. So we had a great team of designers over there that helped us put together a center that really showcases the horses, the history, the bourbon, and a new section that we have called Explore My Lex, which is everything from restaurants to festivals and events, different things that happen throughout the year that are of interest to both locals and people who are visiting us. Well, certainly we always welcome people here at the Visitor Center, so just come on down and see us. We're open Monday through Friday from 8.30 to 5 and also on Saturday from 10 to 5, and then during the summer months also on Sundays. You can also go online 24 hours a day. We have a very robust website at www.visitlex.com. We've got a lot of great interactive displays here at the Visitor Center. several touch screens that showcase different areas of interest this one obviously obviously is for bourbon you can learn all sorts of things about bourbon see some videos of the local distilleries that sort of thing you can even come over here and if you'd like to smell what one of the bourbons smells like that's a really fun thing for folks to do and a great interactive tool for us behind you here we have a replica of a working still which I think is a lot of fun. Bourbon, of course, is a big driver for tourism here in the central part of Kentucky, so we definitely wanted to get that information out there for people. This screen over here is all about the history in central Kentucky, so when you click on that, it'll take you to, again, a library of films that we've put together on different areas around town. We have all sorts of information for folks to pick up and take with them. Any kind of attraction that they'd like to go to, we can help them with that. We also are selling some merchandise here now in our new location. We're very proud to have a Lexington KYT shirt now. We also have blue ones for the kids, and those, I think, have been quite popular. Now, something that everybody wants to do when they're visiting a new destination, I think, is eat food that's local to the area. So, you know, not everybody wants to eat at a chain restaurant when they're on the road. So what we have over here is Beyond Grits. This is one of our very new guides that we have. It's a nice little booklet that gives profiles of some of our chefs here in Lexington and the central Kentucky area, and then all sorts of information on winery tours and that sort of thing, along with the brand-new Brewgrass Trail, which is a collection of local brewers that are setting up shop here in Lexington and the surrounding areas.
