that will be beneficial to kids like these and their families in our city we ask that you bring blessing to this meeting we ask for clarity for good conversation and that decisions will be made that and passes and now we have two presentations i'd like to ask diane spencer to join me at the podium please since november 2nd lexington has been honoring and thanking our veterans for their service to our country our week of valor which is actually two weeks of valor this year we have had celebrations which are continuing through this saturday november 16th when we will hold our veterans day parade downtown tonight we are celebrating an important milestone for an important service organization the american legion auxiliary units recently the american legion celebrated its 100th birthday joining us tonight are some of our local legionnaires representing the four auxiliary units in lexington unit 8 the man of war unit unit 132 the nathan calder unit unit 313 the federal unit and unit 341 the thoroughbred unit and i would first like to ask anyone here tonight with the american legion to please stand and be recognized anyone very good thank you very much in 1919 the american legion was formed by congress it serves our veterans and youth with various programs including heroes to hometowns and american legion baseball the group is the largest veteran service organization in the country it is committed to mentoring youth promoting patriotism and supporting national security with us tonight is past national southern division vice president and kentucky past american legion auxiliary department president diane spencer spence spencer excuse me and i'll ask diane to say a few words for us thank you mayor gordon hello again my name is diane spencer i'm with the nathan calder unit 132 i'm here to tell you a little bit about the american legion auxiliary an organization celebrating a century of service in a service from 19 for the year 2019 to 2020 we are part of the american legion family which includes not only the american legion but the american legion auxiliary the sons of the american legion and the american legion writers none of these organizations would exist without the american legion we all are created as a veteran supported organization the american legion was founded in no american legion auxiliary was founded in november 10th 1919 just a few months after the american legion the american legion was formed by formed following the world war one by combat troops of the american american expeditionary forces in paris france in 1919 the american legion was later chartered by congress the legion service the support group a social club and extended family for formal servicemen after its formation several women's organization wanted to become official affiliations of the american legion however after taking this consideration members of the legion decided to they would organize a new organization to be formed the legionnaires wanted a new organization made up of women most closely associated with the men of the legion it was then the american legion auxiliary was established in less than one year more than 1 300 local units were organized in more than 45 states today the american legion auxiliary is world's largest patriotic patriotic service organization the american legion auxiliary has more than 600 000 members nationwide our mission is to support the american legion serve veterans military and their families a mission that remains unchanged for 100 years you can also find the american legion members across the country helping military families cope with the effects of multiple deployments members showing compassion of injured and homeless veterans by providing resources in their communities the american legion auxiliary co-sponsors an annual national creative arts festival with the u.s department of veterans affair this nationwide program at the va facilities is formed rehabilitative treatments to help veterans with physical and emotional disabilities the american legion auxiliary teaches our youth how to be good citizens units across the country conduct junior activity programs to help young members to develop leader skill leadership skills and also our children and youth program assist and recognize kids to perform a direct act of physical bravery with the youth heroes award the american legion auxiliary good deed award recognize those who contribute in a special way to society through community service high school juniors learn how to become leaders of the american legion auxiliaries girls state programs and the american legion auxiliary girls nation programs the american legion auxiliary members volunteer the more than 12 million hours each year the estimated value of volunteer service is 1.1 billion dollars we invite you to join us today to become a member a volunteer or an advocate for the american legion auxiliary and its mission thank you for this opportunity to speak in whereas the american legion is the nation's largest veterans service organization advocating patriotism promoting national security and mentoring youth and whereas lexington has four american legion auxiliary units unit 8 unit 132 unit 313 and unit 341 and whereas the city of lexington appreciates the support of our local legionnaires which you give to our veterans and to our community now therefore i linda gorton mayor of lexington do hereby declare november 14th 2019 american legion day in lexington congratulations thank you thank you are there others to receive the unit eight okay is especially exciting for me we are in the presence of champions for Lexington Ian's we all are aware of the greatness of the Lafayette band but this group is especially great on October 12th the Lafayette high school marching band won the prestigious 2019 bands of America Johnson City regional championship finishing with a score of 88.8 Lafayette defeated schools throughout the southeast including schools from South Carolina North Carolina Virginia Georgia and Tennessee while that is quite an impressive accomplishment the generals weren't done they followed their regional championship by winning yet another state championship making it the 21st in program history so tonight we are celebrating their incredible accomplishments by hosting band director Chuck Smith who was actually my son's director he was one of those percussionists you had to work to keep in line right Robert Bishop along with drum major Shannon James Grace Hughes Jennifer Gassie and Phoenix Swartz Ward on a personal note the Lafayette band means a lot to my family my husband Charlie played oboe for the Lafayette band and they were winners back then and I served as Lafayette Band Parent Association president and when my children were part of the band seeing the success continue for this program is incredible I speak for everyone in Lexington by saying we are all so proud of each and every one of you and look forward to seeing the continued success of the program this is hard work within a team and it is such a wonderful accomplishment so before I read the proclamation I'll ask councilmember Jennifer Reynolds to give some comments tonight I just wanted to congratulate each of you and all of the members that aren't here this evening on your big accomplishment and bringing home your 21st Governor's Cup each band member and each director plays an important role in being able to do what you all did and I know that you dedicated hours and hours and lots of hard work in order to do what you did and accomplish what you accomplished and on behalf of the 11th district and the city I just want to say we're very proud of you and I wish you all the best in your next endeavors thank you councilmember Fred Brown you're very interested but you have a personal connection well I've got several my youngest daughter actually was on a ward winning marching band I had two grandchildren before this year that were actually in a winning marching band I happened to go to Bowling Green this year and watch them and they had an awesome program and I've got another grandson that's a freshman in this year so I've had four in my family that's been champions so awesome I've got a special place in my heart for Lafayette marching band pride of the bluegrass right go generals all right let's read the proclamation and then we'll all go get a get a photo made okay and in in case you're not familiar with marching band in the high school the field commanders actually are the directors of the band on the field when they're doing their shows so a lot of pressure right whereas Lafayette high school marching band has an outstanding winning tradition and whereas this year the band known as the pride of the bluegrass won both the state 5a championship bringing home the governor's cup and was named bands of America regional champion and whereas the band dates back to 1939 the year the school opened and whereas each year the band under the direction of Chuck Smith has over 200 members now therefore I Linda Gorton mayor of Lexington do hereby declare November 14th 2019 Lafayette band day in Lexington congratulations I'm gonna give director Chuck Smith just an opportunity to say a couple words we do take great deal of pride in representing our school and our community and Lexington
