And at this time, we have a presentation. and so McKenna's son is here with her parents and is David your brother there you go so welcome and council member bledsoe is going to join me we have as we all know some incredible young people here in lexington and tonight we are lucky to be joined by mckenna's son and her family McKenna, would you join me at the podium? McKenna is one of our best and brightest. McKenna is Kentucky's Distinguished Young Woman of Kentucky for 2022, and she is a star at Dunbar high school. She's involved in, and in many cases leads, a very long list of activities and organizations at school. Those include the future problem-solving team. I love that. the beta club, speech and debate team, the Dunbar tennis team, and more. On top of her leadership and involvement at school, she somehow finds time to be active in our community. She has volunteered for over 100 hours at Baptist Health facilities. She teaches the flute and the guitar at Bluegrass Youth Arts and more. She has received a National Congressional Award Gold Medal, which is Congress's highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals. First of all, congratulations on all of your accomplishments. You're not very old yet, so you have a lot to go, don't you? We are very proud of you and wish you continued success. And I really can't wait to see what your future holds. And we are very happy to have her parents and her brother David, who's seven years old. And so with that, I will read the proclamation and ask McKenna to say a few words, and then I'd like Council Member Bledsoe to say a few words. Whereas McKenna's son, a senior at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, has been named Kentucky's Distinguished Young Woman of the Year, and whereas McKenna has excelled academically, scoring perfectly on both her ACT and SAT and has become very involved both at her school and in the community and whereas distinct distinguished young women awarded McKenna a $9,400 cash scholarship for college and whereas McKenna is a very strong role model for girls and young women throughout Lexington now therefore I Linda Gorton mayor of Lexington do hereby declare February 17th 2022 McKenna Sunday in Lexington And if you want to leave it here, would you like to say a few words? I've lived in Lexington my entire life, and I think always in my imagination, I kind of wonder what would it be like to be in front of the city council with the mayor and at this day this is the best opportunity that I've ever had and I'm just so grateful to have grown up in the beautiful amazing city of Lexington for my entire but my 17 years which isn't very long but long for me and I'm just so thankful for all of the opportunities that every single one of these council members here upholds for all of not only the students within Fayette County and Lexington, but also all of the adults and all of the children. I'm so thankful that I live in such an amazing and caring city, and I would not be here without all of you all as well. So thank you so much, everyone. Thank you. In fact, when they moved to China, they were pregnant with their oldest, and we threw a baby shower at the Patterson office tower. Pretty sure it was the only baby shower ever thrown at the Patterson school on that floor. And so I've literally known their family since she was a baby, since he was a baby. and they're an amazing testament to these two amazing people right here. They've raised amazing children who have invested in this community, who went to graduate school here, who went to UK and said, I want to be here, I'm going to stay here. Mr. Sun owns several businesses, has invested a ton of time and effort into not just the Asian community but to Lexington in general, has been a role model in a number of ways in social activism places, not to mention has raised just incredible children who I hope run for council one day. She's in the tent, so I can say that. Just so proud of you and so proud of who you represent. And it's such a wonderful honor for Lexington. And I'm so excited for your future. Council Member Maloney. Thank you, Mayor. And I want to talk about this day. This day is one of the darkest days I ever was being a council member. And some of my colleagues were here. and it was in my district at that time and I just want to recognize Chuck Williams the firefighter from the Luttonton Fade urban county government died on the line of duty death today would mark 25 years it seemed like it was yesterday I remember this day like it was yesterday it's one of the saddest days I've ever remembered being a council member and it was tragedy and it will always be in my memory for the rest of my life and to the fire department You are the best and my heart goes out to you all. Thank you. Yes, thank you for remembering that. Councilmember McCurn. Thank you, Mayor. I'd like to share a few photos. I'll try and be brief here, but yesterday we had quite a turnout. We had a fourth and fifth grade classes from Metathorpe Elementary came and we're able to come sit here in council chambers chambers and do a little mock trial session. If you'll go back to that last picture for a second, that little man looks a little familiar. That's my oldest son, Adam. His class, several, they were all the fourth and fifth grade classes were able to come and do a mock council session here. And so I do have a few people I'd like to thank, but it was a great turnout. I think we had 66 kids, quite a little noisy. I apologize to those who are actually working and trying to get work done. I know that several people would pass by and go, what is going on up there? But it was a good time, a lot of fun, a lot of good conversations and questions. I know that many of you, we sit behind this desk and we get to ask questions and have conversations, but they look at it from a completely different scope, a different lens than what we see things through. So it's nice to see things through their eyes for a little bit. But I would like to thank second district legislative aide Alicia Larmore, Council Clerk McKenzie, our council members who came out. We had Council Member Sheehan, Council Member Reynolds, Council Member Brown, and Council Member Baxter. Mayor, thank you for coming by and speaking as well. I know the kids were thrilled to see all of you all. And I'd also like to thank Danny and Annie from Environmental Services. They had a watershed game that the kids got to play, and it was a lot louder out there than it was in here. But it was a great time. Several of the kids at the end of the conversation came by and said that this is by far one of the best field trips that they've ever had. So I was really thrilled to hear that and look forward to doing the next one. Oh, sorry, one more. And thank you to Meadowthorpe Elementary and the teaching staff. So, thank you. Thank you, Mayor. Your son did tell me that he thought he would be running for office as soon as he was able. Challenge accepted. No, I'm just kidding. No. Thank you. Thank you. Vice Mayor Kaye. Thank you, Mayor. I just want to remind council, it's kind of ancient history, but we passed the ARPA stuff this afternoon. Yeah, it's true. And then the question, Council Member Ellinger asked me, well, what's the procedure? And I check with Mr. Barberi. And his opinion is the easiest way to handle it is pretty much like we do with when we have a budget stabilization or fund balance discussion. We approve a list and then essentially we don't take any more formal action. It then goes through the normal budget process. So unless anybody would like to see that differently, that's what we'll do now. Thank you, Mayor. you congratulations to the council um let's see council member lamb thank you mayor and i've just decided to speak after hearing councilmember kern talk about uh bringing in the fourth and fifth graders um there'll be a lot of these moments this year that i'm going to be saying things like this but i hope and pray that those council members that carry forward the torch in the next years that you all will recognize the value of bringing the students in this chamber and having mock council meetings. I remember the very first time I ever had a mock council meeting in this chamber. And I tell you, the kids and the adults, their eyes light up too. But I hope you all will. I encourage you all to make sure that you make those kids matter. Bring them in here. Show them what it's like to be in this council chamber. or don't let them be waiting until they're 30 or 40 or 50 and think that they can run for office. Let them know that they can do it at a much younger age. So I'm hoping that, and I'm going to be cheering you all on to and encouraging you all to do that, and I appreciate Councilman McCorm for doing that because it's our next generation, so we better be molding them, so I'll tell you.
