We continue with big news from Parks and Recreation with the announcement of Kelly's Landing, which when complete will offer Lexington's first public Kentucky River access. Welcome to Kelly's Landing, Lexington's first public river park. No kidding, this has been a labor of love. So we are planning to open this fall and I know that there are people all over town who cannot wait to put their kayak or their canoe in this water. I know that John Kelly is here in spirit and we've honored him by naming this park Kelly's Landing. I began working on this project my first day in office, in the mayor's office, and I am thrilled that it's finally happening. Monica Conrad and I started conversation, which led to negotiations with the Kelly family in 2019, my first year. Our progress was slowed by the pandemic, but we announced the sale in the spring of 2022. And since then, we've been working on site preparation. And one of the great things about this that I want to mention is that this land was purchased using the Parks Acquisition Fund, which is money which developers pay when they develop property. So then they pay some into the acquisition fund. Kelly's Landing will provide new opportunities for recreation in Lexington. There will be walking trails and those who love kayaks and canoes will have a place to get onto the Kentucky River and travel 12 miles from lock to lock. This will be the only public access to the river in Fayette County. I want to share a quick story with you that illustrates what goes around, comes around. Years ago, and I stress years ago, my then boyfriend and now my husband and a couple of his fraternity brothers purchased a small runabout. I don't know why I said runabout because it seldom ran. And they docked the boat here at this dock that Kelly's owned. I spent many hours in the same place waiting for them to get the boat running, which it probably did maybe one time. Actually sitting in the same spot today, taking in the same beautiful view of the river and its shoreline is a very fond memory. In the end of that other stories, the roundabout eventually sank here and it had to be pulled out and was a total loss. But that, no, it was a long time ago, but it did. But that is the memory of the past and today is a milestone for the future. Kelly's Landing is an exciting and most unique addition for our city and our region. And as I said at the beginning, the 12th district, I'm thrilled. The Fund for Greater Lexington is investing $150,000 in a master plan for this property. The Fund for Greater Lexington's investment will allow us to open the park sooner with a great plan in place to match our community's needs. The residents of Lexington will have what many cities take for granted, a riverfront park. To support this vision, we are so thrilled to announce today that the Fund for Greater Lexington, in collaboration with the Parks Department, has hired Gresham Smith, an experienced and well-respected design firm, to create the Kelly's Landing master plan. Together with the Fund for Greater Lexington, we'll be engaging the community to transform 30 acres of natural space here at Kelly's Landing. The master plan here will be a guiding document for future development. The park will have a natural areas designation, including a mission to preserve the beauty of the region, highlighting important historical features and cultural connections, and providing opportunities for visitors seeking outdoor adventure. We will also explore educational opportunities, watershed and water quality education, curriculum-based environmental education programs, and learning about the landforms, geology, and the towering limestone cliffs of the Kentucky River Palisades. Adventure programming, as I mentioned, that education will also be a key component of our work here at Kelly's Landing. Our day would not be complete without recognizing the Kelly family. John Kelly's grandparents purchased this property 100 years ago this year. That's a milestone that we will continue to recognize and really appreciate them entrusting this land to Lexington Parks and Recreation. Lexington officials joined with many other leaders around the globe in marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the significance of that day. Even 80 years later, it has special meaning. D-Day is the greatest amphibious landing in history. It changed the world. And for so many Americans, D-Day is still very personal. On that day in 1944, President Roosevelt prayed with the nation. He said, for the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed. But we shall return again and again. And we know that by thy grace and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph. Perhaps you lost a close relative or a friend on those beaches. Perhaps you learned about the 4,414 Allied troops, including 2,501 Americans, who died there through a movie or a news report or another way. Or perhaps you visited the beaches at Normandy or the Normandy American Cemetery. D-Day has a special meaning for all of us. Lexington has an extraordinary connection to D-Day and to Normandy through our sister city, Deauville, France. The sister city relationship between Lexington and Deauville is one of the oldest sister city relationships in the world. President Eisenhower created the organization in 1956, and Lexington became Deauville's sister city in 1957. The people of Deauville, working with our outstanding sister city's executive director, Kay Sargent, have helped us put together this program tonight to again demonstrate the reverence they have for the Americans who died on the Normandy beaches. Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice to free France and Europe from Nazi Germany. When we come back, the mobile market celebrates a milestone. Welcome back to Lexington Now. As we continue our look back at 2024, the mobile market celebrated one year of bringing food access to those who need it most in Fayette County. We knew that the food access in our community is something that really would improve health outcomes for individuals in marginalized communities who don't have access to grocery stores, but have access to convenience stores and things like that. And if we look at food as medicine, and we know that helping folks get the food, the fresh, healthy, affordable food that they need, we knew that we could improve our community for everyone. And so we have, now we're celebrating this month, the one year anniversary of the launch of the Lexington Mobile Market. The Lexington Mobile Market has been a big success in its first year due to the partnerships that have been created and strengthened between the Lexington-Fayette County Urban Government, Kroger, and God's Pantry Food Bank. The other piece to that success has been the willingness and support of Lexington communities and neighborhoods that we visit and serve. So we have some data points to share to track the impact of the mobile market in its first year of service. Currently, the mobile market has 24 active sites that we are visited at least once per month. From December of 2023, so right after our start, to mid-October of 2024, the mobile market has visited a total of 46 different sites here in Lexington. During the same period, mobile market was just shy of $100,000 in total sales and saw 7,257 total transactions. So thanks to the acceptance of EBT and SNAP benefits as payment methods, over 30% of those transactions were paid for by using EBT and SNAP. The mobile market hit the ground running in December of 2023, but since then we've more than doubled its total sales on an average monthly basis. So we're seeing a lot more traction in the sites that we're visiting. Thank you once again to our partners and neighbors who made this project a great success. The Lexington mobile market has impacted many communities, neighbors, families, and it's first year and we're just picking up steam. We look forward to continuing to serve more and more Lexingtonians and expanding our reach. We always are looking for new neighborhoods and sites to visit and to try hosting the mobile market. If you want to inquire about hosting the mobile market, please contact myself, John Rupp, at God's Pantry Food Bank. Hunger across central and eastern Kentucky is growing. By some 20% over the last 18 months. Demand is heavy. Needs are great. What this mobile market does is it demonstrates the power of public-private partnership to successfully help individuals access food. And this particular program is about providing resources in food deserts, often in locations where folks are limited in their ability for transportation, so that they have easy, convenient access to food. Roughly a third of the customers who use this market are on SNAP benefits, food stamps. And it provides an easy, convenient way to best use that benefit so that folks can thrive. We wrap up our look back at 2024 with the big news for Lexington's older population with the groundbreaking for the new Senior Center at Shilito Park. So today we are breaking ground, finally, on a big step forward for our community. The new Senior and Therapeutic Recreation Center that we are building here right in Shilito Park. Let's hear it! Yeah! Hundreds of people will soon be able to use and enjoy this facility and all the activities and programming that come with it. And I could not be more proud of the two programs that will operate in this center. First, we're adding a new Senior Center. Lexington is getting older and it's getting better. You can take from that what you want, right? Especially for senior citizens. According to the census, our 55-plus population accounts for about 25% of our residents. A fourth of our folks are 55 and older. In case you don't know, I'm in that group too. Our popular Senior Centers are already crowded. And this new Senior Center facility will offer much-needed services in a part of town where a lot of seniors live. Next, this center will be home to our Therapeutic Recreation Program, which supports individuals with disabilities and special needs. We are really excited about this. In Lexington, we are so fortunate to offer spectacular programming for our residents. Two of those programs are represented here today and will be joining forces under one roof to bring our community even more opportunities to get involved. Senior Services focused on our aging population and Therapeutic Recreation focused on our neighbors with disabilities. Conveniently located in the heart of Lexington's South End, Shillitoe Park is the ideal setting to become home to the city's new Senior and Therapeutic Recreation Center. With the ever-increasing growth of our aging population, providing enriching services to meet the needs of our active senior adults is essential. Furthermore, having the ability to increase offerings to our special needs community is long overdue and much needed. I'm confident that this wonderful dual-purpose facility will serve as a model for excellence for years to come and will be an inclusive place where people can gather for enriching education, socialization, exercise, recreation, and information, all provided by a great staff that understands and cares about them. This project is not just about bricks and mortar. It's about creating a place where senior adults and people with disabilities can gather, learn, stay active, and enjoy each other's company in an environment that fosters well-being and respect. As an age-friendly community, we recognize the invaluable wisdom, experience, and perspective that seniors bring to our lives. Thank you for being here. You've lived through long times, great change, and challenges. They have so much to offer in terms of guidance, advice, and inspiration. Equally, we value the contributions of people with disabilities. They bring rich life experiences, resiliency, and perspective that enrich our community. People with disabilities, whether physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental health-related, are our friends, colleagues, and family members. They possess strengths, skills, and insights that benefit us all. Their inclusion, voices, and lived experiences are essential in creating a vibrant, accessible, and truly inclusive community for people of all ages and abilities. It's hard to believe that just 10 short years ago, we were breaking ground on the Lexington Senior Center. How many of you were there with us for that? A bunch of us. That location is the hub of our Division of Aging and Disability Services and complements and supports the other three satellite centers located through the community. This one will give us a fourth satellite center for the city. Across this division, just this year, we have served 3,200 seniors. 63% of them have participated in fitness activities. 988 new seniors have joined. And 83% of them have already participated in activities. As you may know, seniors are the fastest growing segment of our population. By 2030, for the first time in history, there will be more people over the age of 65 than under the age of 18. The success of our seniors program is a testament to the professionalism, commitment, and creativity of our staff who have dedicated their lives to serving seniors. Bringing together seniors and people of all ages with disabilities into one space is remarkable. The program, which will celebrate 70 years in 2025, was started in 1955 by city employee Dorothy Large. It provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities and special needs to enjoy activities through recreation, leisure, and play. And Jill and Brent do an amazing job of finding creative ways to engage in all of those activities. Over 50 programs are offered throughout the year. The mayor mentioned our wonderful summer camps, which will continue at parks like Woodland Park, Castlewood Park, Dunbar Community Center. It's important that we remain involved in all aspects of our community. But now, Therapeutic Recreation will have a home here at Shiloh Toe Park. That's all for now, but as always, you can keep up with us on social media. Check out the latest traffic updates on X at LexRex, or catch our live traffic cams on LexingtonKY.gov.
