at Deep Springs Elementary where I was invited to read to the entire third grade there that was my first time at Deep Springs this school year which I told them I loved since the school is down the street for me I would love to come back more and I just enjoyed all the questions that the third graders asked most importantly they want to know why councilmembers don't get paid that much so and I said I don't know so that's something for the children are really concerned about and next I yesterday my day actually began at 8 in the morning at Mary Todd Elementary where I was invited to be part of the fourth and fifth grade career fair many of the students they're very excited about what they're gonna do when they grow older and I always told I told them all who had aspirations of being basketball players or soccer players to always have a backup plan because what if you get injured and so that's something that they didn't think about so many of them are thinking about three other careers they could do on top of that so it's always great to engage engage our next generation of leaders and as always to my Mary Todd Bulldogs I will see you soon thank you thank you councilmember Reynolds Thank You mayor I wanted to mention that yesterday the police department invited us out for council field day to the police academy and we had a wonderful time I want to especially thank councilmember Baxter who helped facilitate this we had a conversation with many of the chiefs and talked about how we wanted to be you know more engaged and they invited us to do this really eye-opening experience I think some of us learned a lot yesterday I know I did so if for my colleagues who have not done the citizens police academy I highly suggest it it was wonderful and we just got a taste of it yesterday it really helps us to understand what our police go through every day and what they're trained to do and so we got to do the mounted we got to see the mounted police and a canine unit and ballistics and we had some very eye-opening simulations that I will not go into right now and I just really wanted to thank the leadership the chiefs and everyone that was involved I know that you all spent a lot of time on this and being with us yesterday and I'm just really appreciative and to those of my colleagues and aides that came out so thank you thank you councilmember Police Department our fire department a division of waste management partners for youth in the Georgetown area Neighborhood Association for a great adopt-a-park last week there were tons of kids that got to see how up close and personal how our C divisions work and speak with our fire department our waste management department and our police department so thank you all for participating once again this year and thank you to partners for youth for hosting another great adopt-a-park week for our kids next I'm just to remind my matching station neighbors that we're going to be doing a neighborhood clean up on Saturday April 26 beginning at 10 a.m. please meet in the parking lot of the clubhouse and we'll have all the trash bags and tools there for you to clean up our our neighborhood next don't forget about kite fest is coming up next weekend April the 26th at Madison Station Park please come and bring your family and your kites and if you do not have one the parks recreation will have kites group with a selected work group and community members and stakeholders to help shape the vision for the grand reopening celebration of Douglas pool including the discussion of programming exploring ways to engage neighborhood residents for staffing opportunities and many different other topics I'm following discussion we tour the facility alongside project managers to learn more about the progress of the upcoming of the upcoming project I'm excited about what's ahead and committed to making sure that the space reflects the needs and prides of our community and with that I would like to give a the latest update for Douglas pool so as of right now the pool is slated to be finished and ready to open in early July my office and park team understands that this is not the news the community wants to hear nor is the news that I'd like to hear needless to say I can assure you that parks will continue to work with the contractor and design team to have the center I'm open as soon as possible there's understanding that understanding that our kids in the west the end of town and on the north side of town deserve and need access to a swimming pool while the construction is being complete due to this parks and rec will be working with the neighborhood associations and schools and affected areas to provide free pool punch passes which are able to be used at other parks and rec pool locations in Lexington until the the pool is finished I'm so I look forward to seeing our kids and youth back at Douglas pool and I can assure you that I'll keep my finger on the pulse and provide you with updates and information as it comes and a special thank you to the parks and rec staff for their continued work on this project and then moving on also during the recess I had the pleasure of attending the BMW chamber trip and I want to thank the black male working Academy for the opportunity to join their youth chamber trip to Charleston South Carolina it was an honor to travel alongside these young scholars share my experience and witness their growth throughout the trip investing in our youth is one of our most important things we can do the investment put the investment put into these youth young men from the BMW organization is outstanding and a blessing directly providing them with a platform not only to see success but also providing them with pathways for them to reach success and this is what I mean when I say that our kids deserve a platform and a chance to dream I'm so I'm grateful to be able to be a part of that trip of the in the powerful experience that it brought to me and the powerful experience it brought towards the kids these young men's are change agents and future leaders and I can't wait to see what is next for them and then lastly I just have and that's a picture of councilman James Brown and Jordan who went on the trip as leaders as well so thank you councilman James Brown for always investing the youth as well and then lastly um I'd like to share two upcoming events in the first district the first being the windburn community partner partners and the windburn every social association is hosting a community health fair Friday May 16th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the community action campus one one six nine windburn Drive there will be on-site health screenings that are free and quick resources games and activities and free food and then on to the the peace walk the the annual Antonio Franklin jr. peace walk is Saturday April 26 at 1 30 p.m. taking place at Duncan Park please join us as we pay homage to mr. Franklin and miss Franklin while also shedding light on the long-lasting impact gun violence has on our community and city there will be many guest speakers including myself and others from the city a community resource fair music food games activities followed by the peace walk throughout the heart of the first district in the East End so a special shout out to mr. Ricardo Franklin for carrying on the legacy please join us April 26 it'll be a great day and thank you thank you councilmember Hale yes thank you mayor last night I graduated from the eight week long citizens fire Academy for those who don't know the citizens fire Academy is a free dynamic eight-week program designed to give participants an inside view of the Lexington Fire Department's organization operations the program includes lab demonstrations classroom learning and hands-on experience all intended to give the participants a true sense of the Lexington Fire Department I've never experienced anything else quite like it it was exciting fun and above all it was very informational it gave me the opportunity to see up close and personal I see me hanging upside down a little bit of what the life of a firefighter is truly like I already had great X a great respect for Lexington firefighters but this experience provided me with an invaluable perspective I want to thank them for their service and for doing this program for the community and a special thank you to councilwoman gray for attending the graduation and also to councilmember Beasley for showing up for meals and support of the program through the citizens fire Academy Alumni Association I encourage at anyone in our community who has not taken advantage of this program to do so the citizens fire Academy is open to anyone 18 or older who lives or works in Fayette County or surrounding counties and has no felony convictions they offer a class in the spring and a class in the fall with each Academy last in also today councilmember Reynolds and I visited the bluegrass pace care pace stands for program of programs of all-inclusive care for the elderly bluegrass pace care falls under the umbrella of bluegrass care navigators and is a program that helps individuals aged 55 or over who needs a specific level of care that might otherwise require a nursing facility aged safely at home we met with Jerry Stewart the pace outreach coordinator who explained the program and gave us a tour of the day center and clinic facilities thank you to Jerry for inviting us to and extending such hospitality if take a moment to remind folks that tomorrow morning it's time is doing their annual wake up Lexington event to bring awareness to sexual assault and domestic partner violence throughout our city this is something that oftentimes goes unnoticed and it doesn't have any sort of age gender religion socioeconomic status zip code it unfortunately happens everywhere and it's something that there is a lot of stigma around so this event is a good opportunity to raise awareness of this and also awareness of the resources that we have here in the city of Lexington for folks who have found themselves in that unfortunate situation so I hope that y'all will go out and support some great local businesses which is also something that I think we want to encourage in this body and participate post a selfie you know hashtag it's time Lex and I hope y'all will participate it and participate in it and show some support for that initiative thank you so much thank you vice mayor Wu thank you mayor congratulations councilmember Hale welcome to the club I'll second what he said about CFA it's a lot of fun and you really do get a good appreciation about what what our firefighters do in the city my only question for you councilmember Hale is when you were doing hands-only CPR what song were you humming baby shark okay that tells us a lot about you okay on to my real announcement as you all know we are in the beginning stages of working on Lexington's preservation and growth management program we've had a public survey up on our engage website for a couple of weeks now but in an effort to give our residents of all districts a chance to really weigh in we're extending that survey through May 1st council members I have already emailed you all about helping us kind of spread that message and reach out to your constituents in your districts as we know a lot of times with public engagement that we do in the city all things are not quite equal when it comes to participation and input from our different districts so there are certainly a lot of districts that could use your help and kind of putting that message out so I wanted to put that out and then for the public if you want to weigh in on this which I think again is going to be a very transformative way of rethinking how we grow as a city you can go to engage dot Lexington KY gov that survey will be up through May 1st and to kind of get your thoughts and opinions about how we continue to grow as a city and there will also be future engagement opportunities as well thank you mayor thank you councilmember Savigny thank you mayor today I want to take a moment to honor the the life and legacy of mr. Vaughn Drake jr. he's a Lexantonian and he's the oldest survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack and he died last week at the age of a hundred and six I had the privilege of meeting him last year and I really had a great conversation with him about Pearl Harbor his time in Hawaii and his time in World War two as a fellow engineer we spoke of his years at General Telephone of Kentucky which most of you might not even know that that existed but it did a long time ago and his lifetime commitment to the engineering profession he's a longtime resident of the Pasadena Neighborhood Association in the 10th district and he talked about all the changes he saw over the decades he'll be laid to rest he was laid to rest today with military honors at Winchester Center cemetery and our community state and nation are forever grateful for his service his wisdom and the example he's set we extend our deepest consoled condolences to his family his son Sam lives in Pasadena in the Pasadena neighborhood and I want to thank them and him for his extraordinary legacy thank you mayor thank you councilmember Sheehan thank you mayor I have a couple neighborhood announcements neighborhood meeting announcements to make on Tuesday at 7 p.m. the fairway neighborhood association is having their meeting that will be at the hearing and speech center again that's on Tuesday at 7 and then on Wednesday April 23rd if you are interested in the renovations going on at the Henry Clay High School we are having a meeting about that with Fayette County Public School representatives from 6 to 7 p.m. at the school in room 104 and then on April 29th if you were in the Ashland neighborhood area at 6 p.m. on April 29th we will be having a meeting at the Lexington Senior Center on 195 Life Lane for projects in that area and then finally we've mentioned the community academies for police and fire and I've graduated from both of those they were great but we also have a community environmental Academy that is returning for this year and I have participated in that and it was definitely a learning experience you get to experience all of the learn about all of the different departments in our environmental quality and public works area and the applications are open for that program currently until April 28th so if you go to our Lexington KY gov website and type in the little search bar community environmental Academy all of the information will come up there we're excited to have that Academy return this year so that's everything thank you mayor thank you councilmember Reynolds thank you I forgot one important announcement every year in Valley Park there is a clean street cleanup Earth Day event to clean up the creek and that Creek oftentimes doesn't get cleaned up any other time throughout the year and so oftentimes people from the neighborhood the Neighborhood Association and Cardinal Valley Elementary come together to clean up so I want to invite everyone to join me it's one of my gray Eric Altman great sorry about that I wanted to start off by sharing my story as a renter I'm a young adult renter I've been renting since I have been 18 years old I started off houseless living in hotels until I moved to the student housing that's off of Angley Anna and then I had to move out of there to where I started to look at more local like landlords and then from then I was able to get into the apartments that I'm in now still struggling don't get it wrong don't get it twisted but we making it we driving I wanted to talk about the federal cuts that are affecting our neighbors the cuts to HUD Medicaid and Medicare things that Kentuckians and a lot of Lexington Ian's rely on to stay healthy and housed I know that there is a lot of focus on the federal government and told in being told that we have to hold them more accountable than our state and local governments I feel like that is absolving you all of your power which I feel like it's not fair state and local governments are just as powerful if not more powerful than federal government to my opinion I'm one of many that are struggling with rental the rental crisis food crisis the health crisis the everything crisis as I like to call it I didn't want to just talk about my story I consider myself one of many a representative of many who don't have the privilege to be able to come up here or time to come up here and speak and not even because they don't have the privilege or time but there is a lot of people that are disabled that don't have the capacity to do what I am sacrificing my time to do so I'm asking counsel to keep in mind those that we cannot see those that we can't hear those we can't smell all of that at the end of the day I feel like we have to let them up and help them so I'm urging you all to continue to fight for renters continue to fight for the unfortunate and the dispossessed thank you thank you our next speaker is Rory Hefner Templar welcome hello my name is Rory pronouns are she they I'm district 10 and I feel like I always have something to come up here and talk about in this current climate so some of you may have heard that the Lexington Public Library intends to roll back its LGBTQIA plus programs it has already taken them off of their website notably the teen pride prom the queer car workshop and board game night also notable the library has chosen to not host a booth at Lexington Pride Festival this year all of these are in direct correlation to what is trickling down from the federal government as a Lexingtonian I am frustrated devastated and I'm concerned for as long as I've lived in Lexington the library has always been a safe place for people of all orientations and backgrounds it is one of the oldest standing organizations in our state's history the first Lexington library opening only three years after Kentucky became a state we should take a lot of pride in our libraries and I do but I cannot stand by and watch an entire group of people face erasure you may say I'm being dramatic but this is how it starts and I can tell you right now if it was really about interest surveys these programs would be flourishing and thriving but at the end of the day it's not up to us a 2023 CDC census found that 4.9 percent of Lexington's population identified as a member of the LGBTQIA plus community if you do the math that's roughly fifteen thousand six hundred and eighty seven people only six months ago the human rights campaign conducted a study that found Lexington to be the thirteenth best city in the country for LGBTQIA plus rights so why do we not feel like that right now I would like to urge you the City Council of Lexington and Mayor Mayor Linda Gordon to use your positions of privilege and power to speak out against these program cuts the people of Lexington have showed up time and time again to make our voices heard we saw what we could do when it came down to keeping Lexington's DEI officer now it's time for all of you to get a little uncomfortable and support the 15,000 Lexingtonians who rely on the library for its services sanctions and programs to live their authentic lives I get up here almost every meeting this year and ask you know demand you to use your elected official titles to stand up for something bigger than you the library will have its monthly board meeting on May 14th at 4 30 p.m. at the Central Branch I hope to see you there and maybe you will stand at the podium like I'm standing here now and tell them how you feel because our voices do matter thank you
